Thread: 130 TD5 Trans Rattle

Hey Bobby D I know those unsettling rattles and quirks to well now since owning my td5 defender for coming up to 18 months and have learnt a bit in those short months. Unfortunately I cant help with your gearbox rattle noise but your other little jobs can possibly help as I picked mine up cheap with quite a few problems.

with your serpentine belt squeak on shut down worth checking your visco fan bearing as could be tight or seized.

Drive line slack mine was shocking and was predominantly the axles and drive members splines being worn to little sharp teeth but also replacing the rear diff for something more solid removed a little more.

the crunchy winding noise as you describe on shut down will be a cheapo rotary engine oil filter mine was quiet until i serviced it, at the time i fitted a generic secondary filter and my noise started. After chatting to an old bloke at work he pointed me to the cheapo filters aren't very well balanced. Since fitting a genuine one in its place its much less desturbing

Your gear box rattle may be from the dual mass flywheel... had a similar issue with mine. Ended up replacing the DMF, clutch, spigot, etc... no more tin-o-marbles when I drive.

Coming from only ever having driven old petrol Jap utes this is pretty different. I've been told the TD5 is particularly clangy because of the 5 cylinders...

Come to think of it, the crunchy winding down sound has only popped up since last service, so a dodgy rotary engine filter sounds like it fits the bill as the culprit. Not a pleasant sound. I'll hit up the mechanic who did it.

Serpentine belt has been nagging me, I changed the Belt Tensioner just after I bought it as it was bent a little and that solved the problem for a week then the squeak on shutdown came back. Found out the belt was not the right model and slightly too long, replaced it with a genuine part. That solved the problem for about 3 weeks, now it's back with vengeance.
I've done some reading and some say it could be the Crankshaft Pulley, but I'll look into the Visco Fan Bearing.

The Clank on takeoff, hopefully something not too dramatic like the A Frame ball joint but we will see.

I think I've found a pretty decent mechanic who seems to know Landies pretty well it's just that it's the age old problem of time and money. I'd love to have a crack at doing it all myself but time not on-site = no money being made, so would be cheaper paying a Mechanic, funny how it works out like that.

Maybe I'm being way too OCD over my Landy, but she's by far the most expensive vehicle I've bought, maybe I should give her a bit more credit for her toughness. The missus wont be happy on spending more money on it though, it was tough to convince her to part with it when we bought it hahahaha.

Righto, if that's the case I may be up for a few thousand bikkies then I guess. Mechanic I took it too a few months ago said the clutch Spigot was starting go on its way out. He said in about 40,000kms the clutch will probably start to slip and that's when it will need a rebuild.

A new dual mass flywheel fitted is about $1200. Cheaper if you go to a HD non dual mass version. While you are in there consider fitting a new output shaft seal.

When my flywheel went all symptoms suggested a thrust bearing. When it was dismantled the dual mass flywheel had disintegrated. It was surprising that it had any drive the condition it was in. Not complaining, it had 350,000 kms on the original flywheel.

as for being the most expensive car to own, yep they can be. It's in the company of an old jag, the RRC, P38 RR and any triumph. Funny that there is an English theme.

I took most of the load out of the tray yesterday save for my toolbox with tools (200 - 300kg) and there was no rattle from the clutch area when lifting my foot of the accelerator. So I now know it rears it's head when under load. Only 168,000kms on my landy though.

I'm definitely looking to upgrade to heavier duty parts as they come up for replacement or the end of their lives. I'll be towing a tool trailer around everyday soon.

It's proven to be cheap to service, just all my other vehicles I bought for between $1000 to $4000 and just drove until they carked it. Want to look after this lady.
