    130 Rebuild project

Gday everyone, after lurking in the background I thought it time I joined in and registered.
Ive started a project breathing new life into an old 96 130 defender I picked up from a friend the plan is to strip it down repair whats needed and rebuild again with a new tray and slide on camper.
Ive stripped it down to assess what needs to be done including motor gearbox/transfer-case, not too many surprises found but I do have some questions that I'm hoping members can answer.
I hear a lot mentioned about upgraded cylinder head on later models can someone tell me when they came in and if my 96 mod TDI is likely to have one.
The land rover engine manual includes a caution saying not to de-glaze the cylinder bores does anyone know why as normally I would have them honed before fitting new rings.
Ive also found two small internal cracks on the exhaust manifold where the turbo vain faces is this common and does it present a problem as the turbo itself is fine.
Thanks in advance for your help.

When it is mentioned upgraded head it is referred to mainly the AMC Head which has different water gallerys
Some say it is needed i guess if you feel you need it and have some spare coin Break a leg.
There is a fellow not to far from you that is a vendor on here and also has a Ebay store (Roverlords) if you needs parts .

Good stuff Wonderlust, I'd love to build up a 130 like that. What type of cab are you doing?
    Cheers

Thanks for the welcome and the replies everyone as soon as I work out how to post pictures Ill include a few of the progress to date.
rangiman, thanks for the info on the head I have an option on a rebuild kit that contains a new head with the improved cooling Ill probably go with that as well as an improved radiator to be on the safe side.
To answer Slunnie's question its a crew cab with a drop side tray which will suit my plans for a slide on camper setup.

Once again thanks for your replies pic,s to follow.

Great project. Looking forward to the build progress.
As well as a good cooling system, plan for some form of engine temp alarm like an engine watchdog etc.

looks like your images aren't showing.

Here is how to do it:

when you create a post, before you reply, scroll down and you will see Additional options - attach files - [manage attachments] - then, [choose file], [ upload] - grab the image from your computer and upload it this way.

There may be other ways to do images here, but thats what I do.
