    acceptable drive line whine

So my 2000 td5 130 has a drive line whine. Its only when cruising, not on acceleration or over run. Its done 147000kms. Having only owned it for 6 months would that be a general condition of owning a defender or evidence that diff bearings and backlash need doing. Its not unbearable but tolerable at the moment. Its got a sal with a maxidrive set up hubs axles and locking centre.

It hasn't got a Maxi low range too, has it ?

They howl, (straight cut gears) speaking from experience.

Er so its not a whine anymore... more a loose rollers in a bearing cage sound. Definitely isolated to 5th gear. Didnt take long to escalate. 2000 kms. Ill pull the box today and partial disassemble and inspect. Hiho..
Would love the upgraded 5th ashcroft box but if its just a support bearing i cant justify the 2k cost over a few bearings and seals on this box. Would love to upgrade the box myself or get an exchange modded extension housing...

Caught in the nick of time. No damage to gears just the support bearing. Oh what a pain to do by yourself.

Work of art in that photo. You should send it to Heston Blumenthal.

Well done finding it early. It looks awful.

How long did it take to strip it?

I didn't really strip the box ad such I removed the transfer case before I pulled the box out. It was then just a matter or pulling of the selector mech and extension housing. That part took 30 minutes. Took me a full day to get the box out. Never done a Landy before. Didn't have all my tools (I moved to a rental a month ago) so it was a little hit and miss. I'm one of those blokes who goes by the saying... if all else fails read the instructions...
