    Puma bearing or turbo noise?

    Puma bearing or turbo noise?
My car (bear) is now at almost 57,000 km, it's been running pretty well and I've been pretty happy with it and the service when I have had problems. On Friday my car , 2012 MY Puma 2.2 110 wagon has developed a very worrying noise, I first believed it was maybe a turbo hose off or something like that as it seems to spool up as you accelerated and come louder but then cease when at Idle it is now got worse and I'm not sure if it's not some sort of bearing noise, my problem is that it is 200 km to the service centre, I have notified them but I'm not sure what it is so it's hard to tell them what the problem is? It sounds to me now like it's louder but only seems to happen when I accelerate or the car is under -- load has anyone had any problems like this or any ideas that could help ?

    cheers

    Hi Digger
It sounds like what we had, whoosh noise under acceleration quite at idle.
engine light come on after 60 kms ended up beaning induction elbow split
and charge hose fouling against coolant pipe.
replaced induction elbow and cac pipe.
mine is just out of warranty, but replaced under warranty at austral qld.
hope this helps (might be someting else for you)
    see ya wow

Sounds like boost leak, I would check all the hose clamps are tight to start with as a leaking hose joint makes the exact noise you are describing.

Digger, check your heat sheild at the turbo. From what your describing, it sounds very similar to what mine sounded like. It had cracked (the sheild) at the bolt on the head and made a noise only on revving. Like you, I thought it sounded like bearings too, was much relieved to find what it was,, having said that, my hose blew again just after it too

Apart from the mentioned turbo hose split.

The exhaust manifold shield on both the early bracket and the later revised one can crack and cause an annoying engine related noise.

Also (but I've only had early 2.4lts do it) the heat shield down the cat, one of the small bolts can work its way out and cause the shield to make the same annoying sound.

    Regards
    Daz

P.S early models, both the heat shield and the mounting bracket can crack, on later models, its just the bracket. The bracket cracks right at the front of the engine, very hard to see under the A/C compressor

    Hi All,

This has just happened to me about 20 mins ago. I'm luckily in the Townsville area (waiting to get on the barge from Maggie Island) so I'm straight to the local dealer for a prognosis as soon I get off the barge. My warranty runs out next week. I've ready had two turbo hoses blow in the past.

    Cheers,

    Danial.

Yep. Mine went into limp mode as soon as the wooshing sound started. Mine has now been repaired under warrant and it was a turbo hose. I can't remember which one of the three turbo hoses it was because I had too much steam coming out of my ears. That is the third turbo hose to blow since purchasing the car new in Feb 2013.

    Cheers,

    Danial.

So it's booked in for tomorrow they are going to have a look at it and see if they can ascertain what the noise is. Haven't driven it for a couple days got a lift with a mate and at the wife drive me around just to be sure I get ready tonight and prepared to drive down because of the noise I thought I'd take its late sitting on around 80 not sure if this will make any difference.

Manage to get 25 kilometres and then the noise became louder and the dreaded orange engine light illuminated!

I turned around and have limped home but the noise is now very loud and the power is gone. I know this isn't solitaires fault but hell I'm getting the crap that is Land Rover at the moment!!

Not bad for one and a half months out of warranty i'm not sure if this will be covered in the extension they gave me on the warranty for the motor when they changed the motor. I really hope so! To have spent this kind of money on a car with much less features than a cheaper other brand 4wd, I was relying on the fact that the first Deefer I had was fantastic. I didn't abuse it - got it serviced regularly and it would do anything for me anytime without any problems...

The noise from this is unbelievable. I am really ****ed off at the moment -

I will email solitaires with a recording I made of the motor when revved at idle and see what is decided ...

Not happy Jan! (Must be a Friday .'fender! )

Can anyone who has had intercooler or turbo hose problems please post a photo or two showing the offending hoses etc and I will crawl around mine and see if I can find a loose hose. After listening to the recording solitaire think this is the most likely cause . Unfortunately I really have no idea which of the 4000 hoses is likely to be an offender and I was told in maybe a large or small hose? cheers
