    Steering Failure

    Long story short.
Pump starts screaming when turning the wheel, steering feels ok, it is a long time since I have driven a Defender mind you but felt more than acceptable. 300kms later the fluid that was in the reservoir is now outside and all over the car, pumped back through the lid, and "glitter" in the teaspoon of fluid left where it all should have been.
No apparent fluid loss from anywhere else.

Is it the pump, the box or something else toasted?

End to the story, I have the most economical Defender going as when it gets home today it will have covered 750kms for around 30lt of diesel.

    Thank you RACQ ultimate cover!

What ever the fault is, you will need to replace the pump, lines and steering box as they will all have been contaminated with metal filings. You will NEVER flush it all out no matter what ANYONE tells you, and getting an inline filter with a magnet in it wont get all the metal out either unless the entire system is clean FIRST. Sorry for the bad news but it is what it is and if you want future reliability then get it fixed right the FIRST TIME.

    Cheers Rod

Well it will be off to the local Landy specialist sometime this week, for a complete diagnosis and exactly how much pain the piggy bank will be feeling

After a quick chat they are a bit suss on the box as well as the pump will probably be cactus, but will know exactly once they look at it.

This car has a lot of ground to make up once this is fixed, confidence levels are lower than a second hand car salesman
