Does the main battery still go flat if disconnected? Are there any parasitic losses?
Aaron
Couldnt find a parasitic loss, battery is 12.54 volts and the alternator dosnt charge past this amount even at 3000rpm. Now noticed the glow plug light isnt working so wonder if the Glow plug heater relay is stuffed. Couldnt find a third wire ? exciter wire and battery light dosnt light up which is apparently connected to the charging circuit. Its all very strange. Battery dosnt go flat and also dosnt appear to be a voltage drop from the alternator to the starter via the cable. Absolutley stuck now.
12.6 is fully charged. Above that is just float and doesn't hold under load. My alternator runs at 13.9 volts. Your starter battery should last more than a week.

Who put the alternator in? There should be the exciter wire, a small brown/yellow striped wire connected to the back of the alternator. Remove this wire and, with the ignition on, touch it against the metal body of the alternator or the head. The charge light should illuminate. If not, replace the globe. If it does, make sure it's connected to the right terminal, should be marked D+, L or similar. The other small terminal is the tacho output for the Disco models, you may have accidentally wired the exciter wire to the tacho terminal.
is the tacho working..?

By Tacho do you mean the rev counter, if so dosnt have one. Yes the brown/yellow wire is there so i will check for correct terminal placement. I fitted the Alternator, as a retired diesel fitter i thought I could manage lol. just suck at auto electrics. Have owned many Landies over the years which makes me and owner/ mechanic. Thanks for all the help btw peeps.
sorry, was in disco mode.
double check you fitted the exciter wire to the excitation connection and not the tacho connection.
the 3 connections on the OEM alternator are different and you can mix them up but on the aftermarket ones the tacho and excite are the same.
