crushed pinion bearing on 300tdi dfender results

howdy all here are the results of the crushed pinion bearing in my 300tdi defender rear salsbury
long story short after the damage was done I managed to get $1000 refund
from the mechanic that caused the damage, there was more then just the over tightened pinion in the salsbury another story,so I took it to another landrover mechanic in cairns pulled the pinion to inspect results are.
bearing was shot of course, now the new mechanic says there is a bur on the inside of the housing which I saw and the crusher tube is crushed so much he cant get it out from the front of the diff, has to pull the whole diff to bits?
he said the preload was about 15lb should have been about 20lb,so replaced
the bearing left the old race in, there are no sounds while driving just a bit of normal driveline noise, im wondering how the crown wheel and pinion might be,and if I really need to pull the whole diff to bits to fix it properly?
here are some pics he took cheers all and thanks for all the help.

yes, if the old crush spacer is shot and the housing is burred you usually have to pull the whole diff assembly to get it out.

Id do it anyway, once bearing metal is free of bearings and kicking around inside housings it usually finds a way to get into other bearings and then liberate more bearing metal to join in a free peace protest that, as usual with all peace protests halts all effective progress.

    sorry.

    without seeing it?

maybe, but opening guess would be not at this stage. you'll know when you take the rear cover off as you can see all the bits from there.
