Defender Heat and long distance driving

Hi All,

I currently own a 2015 110 Defender. With the recent heat waves I have noticed that it gets pretty warm in the cabin on long drives even with the air-con blowing. Reading a few threads the suggestions have been varied but tend to be
1. put in better insulation which also improves sound in the cab.
2. put on a bigger inter-cooler to reduce the EGT's as the exhaust is up under the floor
3. maybe a radiator

While the heat is not unbearable it's not a comfortable heat, although it is still cooler than the outside temps on drives of ~3-5hrs. I am keen to know what other peoples thoughts are on current idea's for reducing the cabin temps on hot summer days.

Start with the simple stuff, I noticed that the area under and behind the cubby box gets quite warm to the touch although I dont have any cause for complaint. Wrapping the exhaust would be a good first move followed by some heat reflective shielding stuck to the underside. the heat shielding should quieten things down a bit as well.

The trip I'm on now I've noticed warm air blows in through the vents so it must be getting warm air from the engine bay.
This will have an effect of the efficacy of the airconditioner when I use it , I prefer the window down up to mid 30's.

I'm aiming to add some heat shields to the exhaust for the next trip as I'm lead to believe this is a major contributor to the warm seatbox/cubby box syndrome.

If you guys run a cargo barrier line it with the clear bistro blind pvc.
I did in my black D2,it made a good A/C an excellent A/C.

If you are getting warm air through the vents i'd be checking that the heater tap is turning off completely

Our Tdi Defender had carpet on top of thick rubber. Not sure if that helped or hindered the heat. Hard to tell in the tropics...

So - I went to Geelong in Feb - mostly on the highway at 100kph - 110kph. I was towing a dog trailer and 4 med sized dogs i.e. 120kg of dogs.

On the way down I kept the rev's up using the gears on the hills - and never let it labour --> all at the expense of fuel economy. On the way back I stayed in 6th a lot up and down the hills to see how it affected fuel economy.

With no science backing this up - I found that the more I went for fuel economy (runing in sixth) the hotter the cabin was. Whilst it would run in 6th quite happy up and hown the hills - I did find the cabin hotter.

I could be wrong - just my recollection of the trip.

Either way - I think the trip was great for the young car - it now has 8k on the odo and it is going really well.
