    MY16 Rear Axles

So I got a new Defender, delivered late Dec. It has D1 style axles which since most defenders have alloys now I thought they must have changed to a while ago, you just cant see them.

I since found out they are only a my16 update.

My question is, why change them so close to the end? Any difference to the diff? Is this an updated part that will be retrofitted as a spare part to older Defenders?

Don't get me wrong I'm happy to not have to deal with flogged out axle caps, just intrigued.

Possibly it's what was left in the parts bin at the end of production. Especially since Lanndrover kept extending the deadline for the final Defender.

Why change so close to the end? Considering the new model is supposed to be so different to the Defender we know and love.

Ridiculous,so 5 minutes before production stops, they have gone to a superior design?..

Agree, they must have run out of the others

Better check the engine,it may be a 2.4

Does that mean owners of older Defenders could change to this style of axle as an upgrade, and if so, would there be any disadvantages?
    Don.

    Did you get a 90 or 110.
From recent reading IIR the 90's went to style of axle pictured, 110's retained the seperate flange.
I've seen pictures of 2 thickness in the material at the flange area also.
Maybe some more knowlegable folk can fill us in on if it's a possible modification for those inclined.
    Cheers, Kyle

I could never understand why the R/R classic , Disco one piece axles were never used on the Defenders. To use axles with flanges on the end that flog out is well known poor design . I have never heard of one piece axles failing at the wheel end . It looks like you wont have to worry about any backlash at that end of your Defender , so good luck to you !!.. Jim

    It's a 110.

    The thickness is about 14mm.

Big advantage, one of my brothers has a D1 with well over 350K on it,has never done anything to the rear axle(except oil changes),and he has had the vehicle since it was almost new.
