what are you calling a coach screw?

a coach screw is round headed with a square boss the same size and length as the dia of the screw , threaded half of it's length....usually used in fastening timber.

what is it that you are trying to hold through your roof?

two screws that hold the front section of the roof to the front pillars
on a 110 defender at the top one each side right side is striped

Why don't you take out one from the other side or any other pillar and take it to any car parts supplier?
    btw, stripped, not striped.

I once saw a Defender at Fred Smith's that he had drilled a hole in the roof and put a stainless bolt through from the underside and dome nut on the outside

Mine came loose many years ago, from memory they were a large (diameter) self tapper into the aluminium pillar (windscreen frame).

Biggest problem seems to be overloaded roofracks, causes everything to flex and the screws work loose. First sign is the mastic seal on the outside opening up because of movement. Biggest PITA was removing the headlining to get to the screws.
Tightened them up after adding some Loctite and carry less on the roofrack now !
