Interesting thread!
I had an autolocker (not a Detroit) in my old Sierra, and it was absolute hell on wheels.
When it would unload, it would just about pop me into the gutter...
Maybe the extra weight of the Deefer makes it behave better.
I've got one in my extreme(sals) with high tough axles... So far it's flawless and all but transparent.

If you are concerned or don't need a locker, consider a trutrac. I have one in the front and an open diff at the back. This combo has been great for beach work and once on a flat mud road. Although not sufficient for long steep inclined bush tracks.

The difference is two things.
1/ The Detroit locker is far superior to the cheaper designs of auto lockers, especially since the introduction of the soft locker series.
( much better than the Detroit's of the 1970 to 1980s as well)
2/ The defender/range rover/disco vehicles have constant 4wd systems which smooths out the effects of the detroit even more as the front diff is providing drive around the corners too.
Hi mudder. I was thinking of going a Detroit but my 130 is rear wheel drive and im worried about it being a pain in the arse in the wet season. Have you checked out youtube of some vids on what they are like onroad.. If you are going a trutrack then disregard this comment.![]()
One more thing is if you are someone who is law-abiding, auto lockers are illegal now
I could certainly be wrong, but doesn't that just mean that fitting an auto locker doesn't require certification. That's not saying its illegal. Or am I wrong?
Another issue from that document is on page 4 part 5 where it says that bypassing an EGR does require certification, so I assume that means anyone who blocks their EGR or installs tuning to cause the EGR to stay shut must get that modification certified for it to be legal. That should affect a large number of people on this forum with Defenders with bypassed or blocked EGRs, which would be illegal unless certified, I assume. If a vehicle has an unapproved modification, doesn't that make it unroadworthy? Would that affect their registration and/or insurance?
