hi all since I need to rebuild my rear salsbury in my 98 110, I was thinking of a Detroit auto locker, ive heard that they are a good option, anyone got one fitted? all opinions appreciated.
cheers all.
There have been reports of poor quality on recent detroit lockers.
Have a look at the Ashcroft ATB
They work brilliantly in the rear because of the constant. 4 WD system.
Very easy install
Very reliable
You should up grade the drive axles............any fully locking diff will place extra strain on them and landrover is not too strong in that area.
Usually undetectable to other defender drivers driving your vehicle when fitted.
Never had issues with towing heavy loads etc...........alot of BS kicking around about Detroit's.
Transforms the vehicle off road and on road with low traction on surfaces like snow and mud.
hi Ron im already running maxidrive axles and flanges all round the rears are 120,000 old just replaced the rear flanges axles seem still good so Detroit sounds the way to go
cheers.
Been running a detroit in the rear of 101 landrover for over 10 years.
It runs 36 inch rubber, manual steering and that short 101 inch wheel base..............all the so called bad stuff for a Detroit and never had a problem and the vehicle drives just fine with heavy towing and the vehicle is legal with 1.5 tonnes in the back and same again no problems.
Works very well off road including rock shelf's , backing up and tight turning.
It allows full steering and traction at times when say a ARB locker would have to be turned off to allow a tight turn.
The Detroit also has a anti lock/ skid affect under hard braking on indiffere't surfaces.
Only real draw backs are purchase price and the need to keep the rear tyre pressures the same to stop any wanting to pull to one side driving down the highway..........but that also works for you and let's you know if a tyre is getting a bit low with a slow leak or something..
On a very rare occasion .............say if the drive line is very hot and you have been pulling a trailer and back into a tight parking spot the Detroit can get reluctant to unlock.
Tyre wear is normal or slightly better.
I fitted one in the rear of a mate's 80 series land cruiser and he reports the same as me and the fact their is much BS about the Detroit..
If fact a Detroit knocker was not toll about the locker and drove the vehicle many miles on hard tarmac roads and was humbled apon learning the Detroit was fitted.
Hi, I'm the same opinion as Ron, you won't know it's there unless one tyre is almost flat, in which case it saved my butt as the harder sidwalls didn't sagg enough in my 110 to let me know , or your bouncing pushing to much accelerator going around doing a 180 on a tight , full lock off camber roundabout.
I've also got maxi or hytuff axles.
Try lucky8 in the states for a price
doesn't seem to be any in qld anyone got any idea where I might get one in Australia cheers
The service and prompt delivery from Bill at Great Basin Rovers in Utah was fantastic.
GBR Utah
Lucky 8 was another US seller & I purchased one off them & they sent the incorrect & poorly packaged unit that I was able to sell ( at a slight loss) on Aulro, so I can't recommend them based on the after sale service & not sending what I clearly ordered. The extra $50 was well spent with GBR.
A couple of observations from 18 months ownership.
A rarely occasional heavy clunk & minor lurch - maybe every 500k on average? Nothing to be concerned about I understand.
Kangaroo hopping around roundabouts & tight turns on bitumen- I'm slowly learning how to minimise these & I'm told this is mainly due to it being new.
You cannot pick its there on bitumen but I've noticed a lesser steering response while 4wd'ing in some circumstances, once again it's a payoff against selectable diff lock, so for the money it's great value.
Cheers, David
I've got one in my county. Very happy and wouldn't hesitate to install again. Like DeeJay I got mine from GBR. From memory it was here very quickly and only a surprisingly small box as it only replaces the side gears etc in a sals - not the whole center. Easy to rip out too if you want when selling the vehicle so keep the parts you remove.
