			Puma clutch rattle

					Hi all,

My 2012 90 has started to get the occasional clutch rattle when in neutral with foot off the clutch. When I put the clutch in the rattle stops.

When it was still under warranty I had the clutch plate/springs replaced and 60,000km later it has popped up again.

Does anyone know if there is a more suitable product to sort this problem out for good?

 Thanks in advance

My 2015 rattles when cold. Once I press the clutch pedal in the rattle goes away. Let the pedal out, it starts again. It only does this in the morning when its sort of cold. It seems to disappear after some time.

 Should I be worried?
Should I just tell Landrover to fix it under warranty?

It could be totally unrelated but my nissan patrol does the same. I assumed it was the clutch thrust bearing, replaced clutch and the noise remains. I suspected maybe an input shaft bearing but after consulting with a mechanic experienced with nissan patrols i was told that my gearbox had a 2 piece shaft and what happens is the hard surface wears down and there is play in the splines. Caused probably by elderly ex owner towing heavy caravan in 5th gear. Clutch depressed the noise stops because the input shaft is not spinning. Clutch released in neutral it rattles because the shaft is spinning and resonating. When driving there is no noise because there is torque threw the drivetrain but lately it's gotten worse and vibrates on take off as well.

I had the same issue too.
It is common with these boxes and LR have a replacement clutch kit.
It is basically the clutch plate spring which becomes lose that's why the rattle goes away when you depress the clutch.
Mine was done 1 year ago.

Clutch failures (it starts with the in neutral rattle) are common on the Defender TDCi 2.4lt (Ford rangers also suffered the same clutch issue, im sure if u goggled it, ford transits would also come up), but once replaced, it shouldnt be prone to do it again if it was done properly.

As yet, I've not seen a 2.2lt with a faulty clutch and had assumed it had been resolved.

As a first time Defender owner I have no idea what is a normal rattle and what isn't.

The whole gearing system seems a bit loose to me. Unless I'm super-careful with my gear changes and do them at low revs - the gear box and linkages tend to make a rattling, clunking noise as if there's a lot of give among all the components.

I have had 3 now in my 2010 defender, first one replaced at 60k under warranty after a battle with them. Then at around 120k it started rattling again, I had to pay for it that time, Land Rover actually came in the cheapest at $1500 to replace it, when I asked about the versions off clutches they stated that it was the latest and greatest version and the springs would not go on it, this was October 2014, well at 180k now and the rattle is back, I will be looking for a NON Land Rover HD one if there is one around for the next replacement.

On my calculations and experience so far the springs are only good for around 60k.

I agree with your thinking about 60,000km as that's roughly when mine started to rattle again. I'm on the look out for a replacement and will post if I find anything suitable. Over on the UK Defender forum they are having problems with clutch rattle also so maybe there is a product from the UK.
