110 from Melbourne to Uluru TIPS

    Everyone,
I am planning to take the family (two teenage boys and the wife) to Uluru in July or August this year and was interested from any members here that did this trip.
I am keen to find out what route they taken and any other tips. No camping involved this time as my wife likes her hotels.
I was thinking going through Mildura and then via Flinders Ranges etc.??

Looking forward for your experiences and recommendations.

    Cheers

re Flinders Ra - there are houses and flats to rent by the night in Hawker, which is quite central for having a look around that area

Stop at the Wilmington Toy Museum while you're travelling through that way. I think Defender owners get in for free. Thousands of toys, and most of them are Land Rovers.

Woomera is also worth the slight detour as you head up, even if you just stop there at the shady park for lunch and see the planes and ordnance in the main square.

I second the Wilmington Toy Museum, definitely worth the visit for a Landy enthusiast.

When you make it to Ayers Rock, I highly recommend climbing it. I know there will be various opinions on this, but standing on the top of that rock is one of the most awesome views of Australia you will ever see, the base walk is fantastic too, but it will never beat the top from my experience.

Just up the road is Kings Canyon, this was much better than we expected, I'd recommend doing the rim walk. There's a hotel at Kings Canyon Resort.

Depending what time you've got you could drive the Mereenie Loop from Kings Canyon to the West MacDonnell Ranges, then on to Alice Springs.
You will need a $5.00 permit to drive the loop which you can purchase at Kings Canyon Resort, and be prepared for red dust and corrugations.
There's lots of great gorges etc in the West MacDonnell Ranges.

    Cheers, Murray

Good information thanks guys. I think I will be allowing 2 weeks for this trip. Most likely will be going to Wilpena pound after watching some YouTube videos.
Looks like a 5000km+ trip so a good service before that will be good idea.

I drove tour buses for 5 years out of Alice and Yulara, PM me if you need any info, in regards to Voyagers Resort at Yulara, or The Alice.

Also if you have time try the Eastern Macs, everyone does the Western, but the eastern is just as spectacular. Ruby Gap is a fantastic camping area, and a challenging, at times, 4wd track along the dry creek bed. Pretty much guaranteed to have it all to yourself.

Sunrise at Rainbow Valley, 75km south of Alice, is just as good if not better than the Rock, and you can camp there.

    Enjoy your trip.

Thanks ozy I will gather some question next few days and will send you a PM.
Tote, I suspected Uluru accommodation will be expensive but will do some more research and see other options.
If it was up to me I will be camping, but the missus likes the 5 star instead of million star, work that one out110 from Melbourne to Uluru TIPS

We camped when we were there last time and the camping wasnt too bad but we did look at the accomodations options which started at about $250 per night for two adults and two kids and went up from there.
We also drove north from the Flinders Ranges up the Oodnadatta track to OOdnadatta and from there out to the Sturt Hwy at Marla. That was a good trip but I'm not sure how you would go finding accomodation if not camping.

Time to go clicking away with some suggestions(Non camping noted) of spots I've been....
On the way out of Mildura after seeing Big Lizzie (Heritage Listed Location) : On My Doorstep
    drop past Home Page
Maybe the night in Renmark(you can loose quite a few hours at the museum).
*Fruit fly exclusion zone road check at Yamba entering South Australia.
    Burra...
Burra History Home History trail will take a day.
    Peterborough...
Get back to the basics of life, back to nature at one of our many bush campsites and test your skills on our newly developed 4WD tracks – Willangi Bush Escapes Bush cabins out of town or a train in town
    http://www.steamtown.com.au/
Up into the Flinders for a while.
PAR's near Blinman, rock art, etc. makes for lots of choices.
    On the way out...
Welcome to the Prairie Hotel Parachilna (I've had a few attempts and going to be doing it in June.).
Farina Township, history right there! - Farina Station
Maybe The Marree Hotel for the night.
Up the dirt of Oodnadatta Track facts & detailed route - Plan an unique Outback adventure
Lots to see along the way with a possible detour out to Lake Ayer.
I doubt you'd get past William Creek Hotel - Home if doing the tourist thing so call it a night there.

I haven't been up past there so I'll leave that for others but follow it to the end aiming for NT.

On the way back there are underground motels at Cobber Pedy, another place worth 2 or more days.
Slip into Woomera museum as has been suggested.
Arid gardens at Port Augusta and lots of other stuff too.
Wilmington and maybe The Barossa if you have time.
    Cheers, Kyle
