    Defender windscreen

    Hi,

I will have to replace my Defender Xtreme windscreen as, after 14 years, it has become very sand-blasted.

I am hoping I can get some feedback on which firms people have successfully used for windscreen replacement. I have used O'Brien Glass for other vehicles but I am wanting to get specific info about Defenders.

I realise I can get a dealer to do the job, but they will probably sub. the job out to a windscreen specialist anyway.

Any information regarding other firms in the Pakenham/Warragul area would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Lionel

Hi Lionel, do u have windscreen cover on ur insurance? If so then if it were to happen to get broken then it would be covered.

No, not for this vehicle. In any case, it wouldn't be covered by insurance as it is a 'wear and tear" problem.

    Cheers,

I replaced my the windscreen on my 1992 defender a couple of years go. Like yours the wear and tear final resulted in a warrant of fitness fail due to cracks etc.
I took it to the local windscreen glass people. They couldn't get a sealing rubber so I managed to source one of those. They then removed the old windscreen and used it as a template to cut out a new one. One advantage of having a completely flat bit of glass.

I have got my last two from O'Briens. No issuesapart from perhaps taking a while for them to get one. However, price is ridiculous for a flat bit of glass. I suggest phoning around - last time I did that and prices varied by more than a factor of two.

For reference, I got mine last year for $110 (windscreen only). Being a student I shopped around for the best price that I could find, so that should give you an idea of what you could get it for.

Haven't checked the range of prices for Defender windscreens. However, wonder if anyone could make informed comments on the range of quality of laminated glass. I suspect cheap stuff from eg China may be "suspect'. eg Less resistant to cracking especially than a recognised quality brand like Pilkington.

When the owner of a physical asset would like to receive money for it while it is something that could not be sold for anywhere near its replacement or real value, receiving money for damage to it that looks like it was was deliberately caused to obtain an insurance payout is sometimes known as a "Jewish stocktake".

Yeah... for that price I doubt that I got the cream of the crop. While I haven't much to say about the strength (hasn't copped any hits) I will say that I have no complaints about the optics; can't notice any waviness or colouring unless you're looking from a very shallow angle in the right light.

Our 2002 Defender is also in need of new front glass - pitting is so bad that it's nearly impossible to see if the sun is in front of you, and night driving is shocking with oncoming car headlights.

Mate of mine has had his truck windscreen replaced (2 x small flat pieces) for a relatively small sum - as mentioned above, taken out, measured and new pieces cut to size.

Obviously nowhere near where you live, but something to think about.
