Tacho- Really could use some suggestions!

So, have spent hours and hours and hours pouring through searches and forums to realize I might be up the proverbial creek.

Skip this paragraph if you don't want a rant
After reading a fellow Landy owner worked with XXXXXXXX, I thought I could trust them to supply me with the correct tacho for my vehicle (2005 TD5 110). I was wrong! Instead I was sold the VDO tach that works on 4,6,8 cyl (supposedly can be tweeked for 5 cyl) that attaches to the W-terminal of the alternator. Unfortunately, the TD5 doesn't come with a W-terminal on the alternator either.
So, after asking ahead of time those questions, I was still assured the tach would work.....may be they know something I don't know! But I do know my business will not be going to them XXXXXXXXX again!
Return here if you skipped above....
Anyways, the tach (part#VDO 333 035 017 G) is installed. Wires attached correctly (triple checked). I used my testing cable to connect the signal wire from the tach to the pink and yellow wire leaving Pin 19 on Black ECU plug. The tester shows a pulsatile signal, but no response from the needle on the tach.
I have read that the signal is not strong enough for the non-TD5 tach. However, I have also read that Lowtension (no longer in business) had tweaked these tachs to accept the signal.
Can this be done? Can I some how increase the sensitivity of the gauge? If not, is this going to be another expensive mistake? Any help would be very welcome.

The VDO unit sold to you is not suitable for purpose - just return it and get the TD5 tacho.

Making it work is a PITA...

I couldn't justify the cost of the vdo one. I might give this idea a Crack. You might be able do do it to the one you have.

Great thread on this, and confirms my thoughts/ worries.

I can't return the gauge since the needle was painted (white) to match the stock gauges

I was recommended to Airco gauges in Sydney, and will talk with them to see what can be done to boost the 5V signal to 12V or increase the sensitivity of the gauge to read the ECU/ 5V signal.

    Thanks again everyone!

Thanks Tombie, I have priced those out, and now the price point is usually >$500......Don't think I need the tach that bad

A simple amplifier circuit would boost the signal to a suitable level to energise the tachometer.

    Thank Aaron,

I'm decent with wiring, but wouldn't have clue as to what the amplifier circuit should look like or where to install. Any thoughts?
