    Wonderful Defender Electrics

Driving back from Brisbane the other day, the blinkers on my 130 and all of the instruments decided they didn't want to play anymore.

A blown fuse was the culprit, but not any of the expected ones. I first checked the fuses to the blinkers which were fine. According to the schematic on the fuse cover, it turned out to be the 15 amp fuse which feeds the wipers . As it rained most of the way to Coffs Harbour and I had the wipers working, I'm at a loss to understand "why is it so"

Anyone else suffered a similar fate?

Hi mate, I had similar, but not the same, problem with the D1. In the end the problem was tracked down by mthodical elimination of electrics that were powered through the particular fuse that was blowing.
So, would this procedure help in your case?
Does the problem fuse power anything else?
Give me a call if it would help.

I've heard of indicator issues caused by a dodgy hazard switch. It might be something to look at?

    dodgy hazard switch.

    Bingo

Hazards, Wipers, Instruments are on that 15A circuit
Indicators route via the Hazard switch sooo it kills them

Your problem will likely be a short/ internal failure in the hazard switch
But it could also be a short in the wiper circuit or the dash circuit?

I never could fathom the "logic" that Lucus used when designing the wipe/indicate/hazard/dash circuitry in the defender. You end up with just as many circuits as if you ran dedicated circuits but by mashing them together failures become more complicated to trouble shoot?

    Anyways

Interesting to say the least. As said, it was that 15 amp fuse which killed the instruments and the blinkers at the stalk, but the wipers still worked as did the hazards. All working again now ......... for the time being
