I'm really not certain which filter is best
But I have bought a Parker / Racor P4 unit with some 2micron and 10micron elements.
The P4 has water alarm but also a 40GPh (150Lph) pump integral with the filter head.
OEM element is 5micron
I have a 2.4l tdci which does not have an in tank fuel pump
As best as I can determine the low pressure supply and pump and VCV on the 2.2 and 2.4 are the same
Sooooo
I have sourced "Ford style " fuel line fittings for the P4
I will make up a new guard that uses existing chassis bolts and
Rightly or wrongly do a swap install of the P4 for OEM filter and housing,
with ignition fused power to the pump running 2micron elements.
Water in fuel warning LED placed into a blank dash switch.
Will mean for filter element changes and fuel system bleeding the engine won't need external priming
I trust Racor elements
2 micron is finer than factory
The P4 has water alarm
My fear is upsetting the low pressure fuel supply
I can't see a problem but geez I don't want to kill a perfectly running puma!

So LR have washed their hands of this - but they have covered 2 injectors and some work.
there is still 2 injectors needing doing and a hifh pressure pump coming to 8k down from 10k i think. qbe said they can cover it as its not a mis fuel but a contamination. was hoping i didnt need to go to insurance but atleast insurance is gonna cover it.
they said the fuel was tested and found to have water. BUT they are pointing the finger at the dealership for not diagnosing correctly the first time around. lol i just want it back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not great that JLR have washed their hands of it all but good on QBE for covering contaminated fuel.
Out of interest as earlier
Do you regularly drain the fuel filter bowl?
Have you noticed water in the bowl when draining?
Im just interested to know the efficacy of the OEM seperator
S
I havent noticed any really. although only drained during service. 10k or every few months.
altho - a year and a half a go I filled up at the same statoin with my mazda after it had rained - car sputtered and had sand in the fuel filter :D
I have the racor r 230 installed before the LR filter saved me once already
I'm also planning to have underbody rust proofing done in the near future. I presume I'd be better off doing that first so the filter doesn't end up covered in a thick, black coating.
On the other hand, anyone know if the rustproofing coating would make installation more of a PITA?
Sashadidi,
Is yours on a 2.2 or 2.4 tdci?
Just wondering if 2.4 how the OEM low pressure pump is going drawing through two filters?
The more I think of my setup - I may actually install the Parker P4 prior to the OEM element, run a 10micron in the P4, with the standard 5micron in the OEM.
With the integral pump of the P4 shouldnt pose a problem pushing through two filters.
Shouldnt have to change the factory element much at all.
ElRey, I have had my 130 treated by Roland Graf in Cairns. They use a wax based coating to all surfaces and cavities. It dries hard enough that it poses no problems when working on things like filters, suspension components etc etc after treatment.
I wouldnt stress either way doing the filter before or after?
