Thought I'd make another thread. I think Dullbird might have experienced the same as I read on defender2.
Basically, land rover went from 'oh sorry, its a manufacturing defect and we will repair it' to 'oh we found water in your fuel tank. no idea how it got there but its your fault! it'll be 10k to fix'
Now, the miss in the motor i've felt before. Ive asked a dealer in both sydney and canberra to have a look - both said oh all is well. and now sydney dealer is saying well you didnt have a check engine lighjt before so it must have been fine
but if you didnt see my other thread - basically car was shaky (motor was) finally got a check engine light. motor knocked and then died. cars been at dealers over a month now. nearly two actually. and first they said the injector had failed. they replaced that. dealer said - still running rough - im gonna try and get good will on high pressure pump - then they said oh will drain tank and see - and now they said oh theres water and mould in your tank.
now,from what I've read, 2007 ish onward pumas seem to have had an issue where the fuel breather allowed water to get into the tank? can anyone chime in on this? I only ever fill at 3 shell stations. one in canberra. one in exeter. and one in sydney. never had a problem with other cars.
So I was hoping (which I think dullbird was at some point) to speak to anyone who might have gone through the same thing and argued with JLR that it should be a warranty thing.
Funny also cause this time last year, my fuel tank had a fairly substantial leak and the dealership that has the car now actually dropped the tank and resealed it. so they are the only ones who have been in there.
Has anyone else had this issue? is it really a case of 'oh well suck it up and get it fixed' or do I have the right to ask for JLR assistance here??

Do you regularly drain the fuel filter bowl?
Have you noticed water in the bowl when draining?
What evidence do they have that water in fuel caused your engine death?
This thread speeds my need to get around to installing the RACOR filter with built in primer and water alarm - I have on the shelf but yet to install!

They went from - we dont think its warranty to - yes sorry irs a manufacturers defect to - yeah no theres qater in your tank. Basically the story has changed so many times since i went in over a month ago. I have no proof of the water being in there. They said they got it tested thursday. Took 24 hours to test (the inlt place i know in australia that tests takes 1 week) but they replaced injectors (they were stuck open) before checking fuel??? Also jlr rep said 3 area managers looking at car today changed to no we already know what it is. The miss in the motor has been reported before. They are arguing that as inever got a check engine light i was probably nothing.
They said they dont know how water got in. Ive read about the breathers tho. Also trivett opened my fuel tank up last year when it leaked.
Serviced at dealers every 10k and each time they say they drain the filters.

Was that like a petrol engine pinging ?
or more like a true miss firing uneven idle?
Was the "miss" at idle or higher revs - dependent on engine load - could you "make it go away" with throttle input changes etc?
Even though no engine warning light - were any faults recorded on ECU?
Im thinking you will need pursue the chain of events - especially if the tank was removed/ drained/ repaired last year. If it is indeed fuel related you will have possible insurance re-course - but that will be a challenge.
Apart from water in the fuel - have they made a diagnosis of what resulted in engine death - holed piston? holed crankcase? bearing seize?
Seems to be lots of unknowns and it seems you have done the right thing with following up issues with JLR.

An uneven idle. Altho not audible. You can just feel the motor shaking. The motor stopepd cause they said 3 injectors were stuck open (would water cause that?) They replaced it and ran the car and it was still running rough. Then they thought it might be high pressure fuel pump. Im waitinf on their email qith the breakdown. Bad communication from dealership and jlr to me really. Its like literally gone from all good to good luck

Mine had what I think may have been similar. Mine was missing altogether though, which was initially thought to be a fuel problem. I got the RACV involved, so they covered all expenses which was lucky, but in the end, LR replaced the entire fuel system only to find out it was the ECU.

This is ******** terrible - and as the other thread showed, you're not alone over the years. I wonder if you can put together a case based on evidence from other owners who this has happened to. And I hope your insurers come to the party if not.
Does anyone know if water in the fuel is something that's covered under a standard vehicle insurance policy? I think I'm going to check with RACQ Insurance tomorrow about this.

I checked with qbe. On their pds it says they wont cover if wrong fuel has been used. But in this case diesel was used so might actually be okay.
