    Old Man Emu shock absorbers

So ive had the second rear break on me within a year of install. Broken top of pin at the eyelet. Driver side this time.

My opinion is that because the down travel is pathetic on these (part no.60038) the moment the wheel suddenly drops into a hole with a hot shocker it snaps off.

Ive been to ARB Keilor this morning to sort it out with them as they are 3 year warranty or 60,000km (ive done a year and 20,000). The manager I spoke to asked me what i want and i said both rears replaced and a spare as i have no trust in them at all. I also told him il be changing them to a long travel in the near future as i cant rely on these anymore. He agreed that the length isnt enough and that they actually do a defender specific long travel shock. So thought id post this for anyone thinking of getting ome 2 inch lift. Do not get these. I think the long travel would be fine, but the standard 2 inch lift shockers for the 90's are faulty and you will have problems with them.

Il keep the thread updated when they get back to me

So in essence there is nothing wrong with the shock absorber, its simply that its used to stop the travel of the axle that's the issue, a deep, sharp and sudden drop with any shock will cause damage to the eye or strip the bottom thread if its not long enough, and its the only way of stopping the axle, if a longer shock is available, then why wouldn't you go with that instead of replacing with same and carrying a spare...?

Had I known about a longer travel shock I would have gone with it. I'm getting these replaced because I need to drive the car in the mean time. I can't organise new shocks right now and here. It's to keep me going.

I still think the shock is poorly built for the design if they do snap. Haven't heard of this happening anywhere else

Please check the compressed length of any shock against your shock mounting points at full compression. Allow a little bit more for bump stop compression.
Then you can go as long as you like as long as you're not shorter as the other end will fail.

Fair enough, I have had it happen with a TJM shock, they were what I could get at the time, fully laden 110, middle of Zambia, my fault shocks were not long enough, and I knew that, I usually have Koni Raids but still don't let them extend or exceed there limit.

Good luck, plenty to choose from, and would suspect most will advise Bilstein or Koni.

Did they supply the shocks with Rubber or Poly bushes?

And did you take the "caps" off the diff?

Does your rear lower shock mount have metal "cups" like this?

See the metal attached to the mount on the diff with the shock bush sitting inside it?
