Thread: Combined deep cycle and cranking batteries

I,ve setup both the defender and my boat with the second/house battery as a combined unit.
I take the view that I can use this to crank the car / boat should my main crank fail.

Have an Blue Optima for the boat and an Odyssey for the defender.

I assume you would still be using the traxide kit to isolate the main battery from your ancillary current draw.

If you're retaining the Optima as an aux battery and using the Traxide to isolate the crank battery like in a typical install I wouldn't bother with anything special for the crank as its never going to get drained so the "deep cycle" ability won't matter.
The danger with putting a combined battery in there is the temptation to hook aux stuff up to it, in which case you're defeating the purpose of having the Traxide and might as well put the in the post and send it to me

A combined style battery in the aux position is a good thing though. I've got a 130AH SSB AGM that has 1000CCA thats been in there for about 5 years now and still going strong.
If my start battery is feeling a bit slow due to temperature or sitting around for a few weeks, linking up the aux (I've got a manual link switch) sorts things out instantly...

What brand? and model number? Last time I was in Autobarn they had nothing like this.

Its called an all rounder battery and made by supercharge - the largest they had on the shelf was 820 or 850CCA but the guy behind the counter says they have bigger ones

I ended up ordering a 1000CA Supercharge mf31-931

I also have a 120ah Deep cycle in the rear of the 130 tub as well - so i usually hook this up to solar to keep charged - that way i'm not really draining my cranking battery and i have a bit of extra gas with the yellow top optima.
The back of the tub has a blue sea split 12 way fuse box - so i access power from the deep cycle in the tub.... or the yellow top optima

Thanks for that. The best run I have had out of any Deep Cycle Battery (big AGMs aside) and including an Optima Blue Top was out of a Supercharge Deep Cycle that never missed a beat.

I've had one set of Allrounder's as my main and aux battery in my Puma going on 8 years now.
Just recently killed the aux one due to a faulty audio setup (not a fault with the battery) and have bought another Allrounder to replace it.
With the life I'm getting out of them I simply can't justify buying the dearer "better" batteries out there.

So after almost a year how is the Supercharge mf31-931 holding up?
Was the Supercharge mf31-931 a standard fit in the battery box, or did you have to modify anything?
My original battery DEC 2013 is on it's way out at 50% life so I am looking for a replacement.
