Backlash can be minimised sometimes by driving skill, replacing bits, greasing other bits etc..

Drive another "good" car for a comparison.
I had this conversation with them today. My 110 gets a little bit of backlash which decreased after the first service when they said they greased the adaptor shaft. The mini Pocket Rockets 90 is practically impossible to get any backlash from no matter how badly you drive it. - I've tried .

Interestingly enough mini Pocket Rockets 90 is an ex-demo car which makes one think it had extra special attention before it was put on the floor for prospective buyers to drive. It also leads one to the conclusion they know how to make a Defender without backlash but they can't be bothered.

As a part of my conversation I did suggest the issue wasn't driving style as we do have a selection of Defenders to compare to and we do know how to drive them. I think unfortunately for them the main service rep has been away sick and we've been speaking to others at the dealership and they tried to fob us off with the old "Its a Defender thing'. The main service rep knows never to utter those words in our earshot and they are now engaged in a backside covering exercise which I don't think will actually fix the problem.

We have had all 3 in numerous times for issues where they have said nothing is wrong but the car comes back fixed. For some reason they have an issue with admitting when there is something wrong with one of the vehicles.

The driving style thing is over rated,Tracey has zero problems driving her TDCi or my Tdi,I regularly car pool with my mate with an 80 series and he has no problem switching between the two either, except deep down I know he prefere's the Defender. Pat

Exactly!!! I'm the most gentle when it comes to gear changes but I get backlash on every single gear change. Sadly it makes it less enjoyable to drive than the 110.

Its probably been mentioned before but there is a reason Ashcroft, Hi-Tough, Maxi Drive etc... all exist and they do a roaring trade, factor it in when buying one and all is good.

Yep, but whilst we bemoan the demise of a let's be honest an antiquated vehicle, I bet Landrover breathed a sigh of relief when the last one rolled off the production line...

And the aftermarket/restoration guys thought you bloody little ripper...

Thinking outside the square, whats the engine like?,does it hesitate off idle?,is the rev jack working/not working if it has it?.I'm throwing it out there because the engine can engine brake the drive train if it hesitates, even for a second, but then drives it again when it fires snatching it quite severely. Hadn't noticed any hesitation off idle. But that's another option to look at. Thanks Pat!

You are welcome to do that, as a AULRO member (and a Defender owner) I offer a no cost inspection on such "Defender querks" quite simply, while Dealers and others may see no value is looking after you... bluntly I see another potential long term customer..
