Hi all,
I'm fitting new front mudflaps to the truck on the weekend. I'm thinking of chopping them short so they stay out of trouble.
Anyone know if there is a min distance they are to be from the ground?
Or, where could I find that info.

Chopping them removes most of the benefit
14.2.1. General Requirements
All wheels of a motor vehicle or trailer (including a ‘Prime Mover’ capable of operating without a ‘Semi-trailer’) must be provided with wheel guards which must be so designed as to protect other road users, as far as practicable, against thrown-up stones, mud, ice, snow and water and to reduce for those users the dangers due to contact with the moving wheels.
14.2.5. Notwithstanding the requirements specified above the wheel guard including a mudflap (if fitted) need not be less than 230 mm from the ground for other than off-road vehicles, or 300 mm in the case of vehicles designed for off-road operation.
BTW...the above seems to refer to the upper limit of length. In another section I saw re ground clearance, the minimum ground clearances were referred to 'with exception of mudflaps'. So from what I see, and I stand to be corrected...you can let them hang as low as you like(no jibes please)....but the bottom edge no higher then 300mm off the ground for a 4wd.
And from truck driving experience, our mudflaps used to be very close to the road, and we were never pinged for it.
Disclaimer.........My interpretation only.
I recently made my own rear m flaps from 6.4mm thick "Insertion rubber" as the trade call it.
Relevantly they are longer than std and at risk when reversing in mud or sand so I needed to mod them near the lowest edge so as to be able to chain or rope them up if needed.
I looked at drilling 3 m8 size holes in ea flap but had a better idea.
I used a hole punch and hammer to make the holes and they are neat cutouts. The hole punch is a part of a grommet/eyelet kit for tarps and cost 14 at kmart camping dept or somewhere years ago. Easy.
Why would you cut them? Long mudflaps are a good thing.
Mine doesn't have front flaps....1/2 is probably better than none at all.
