Not saying that the 500000 ks life expectancy is wrong but why do we say this?
I have a MAN D2566 here that I think has done over 1 million and it runs fine (1.2 Million on the clock)

I would get a 'new' motor mate...
I once 'overheated' an engine after a blown head gasket... had the head skimmed and all re-built, but it never ran well thereafter and after a few thousand more k's, it seized! I think the overheating may have also shagged the block or other internals that were not designed to run at that high temperature.

As Justin C and others have mentioned....
(**keep in mind, I do sell used TD5 engines, so some of my initial comments may seem a blatant "sales pitch")
*The cheapest n quickest repair is to swap the engine out for another used TD5.
*Even with freight costs its still cheaper to get a used TD5,
*I prolly do more "engine swaps" than head rebuilds, BUT to be fair its pretty well always a Discovery 2.
*Now saying all that, a Defender really is worth so much more than a common old Discovery 2, so personally I could think of no better excuse to do a full engine rebuild.... mmmm nice thought.
As I say to owners, they need to consider....
*What they value the vehicle at. (not necessarily from a dollar perspective)
*Are they going to keep it, or sell it off.
*Do they need to just get the "daily drive" back up and running.
*How much have they already spent on it.
*Is it a worn out train wreck.
On the last point I tend to be quite blunt with owners, sure a lot of vehicles have some potential or worth, but if its a rolling train wreck they are better off putting the money towards another vehicle.

Whats a rebuilt exchange Td5 worth plus head?. Pat
Thanks for all the replays and suggestions so far..
I have no intention of selling the car so I think I'll call it a day with the existing 10p motor and look for another..
Unfortunaly rebuilding is going to be to pricey plus a lot of the accessories have done a lot of k's as well so I'm leaning towards a later engine with lower k's
so far been I found a eu3 with 140,000 for 3,500 but would need the find a manual NNN ecu to suit
also been offer a 10p with 230,000 for 2,900 complete which mean I can still use my stage 1 MSB ecu

Well picked up a damaged discovery 2 with 212,000 only to get the motor running to find out the big ends gone so back on the hunt for a donor engine 😞
That post pretty much put to bed all the others on this thread... For goodness sake, it's an engine,, it's not a Saturn Booster. Rebuild it. Diesels are forgiving, and TD5s are amazing.
I think my first, and most important, question would be: what do I want from this car? It has a history of reliability; Yes? Half a million Ks on a TD5 is by no means unusual; Yes?
I would replace the head gasket, and drive the car around like you always have, while you think about it. Maybe your son will need to decide.
