Your car since new?
if so, you'd have to be happy with that..
So my 130 just ticked over 495,000 and on an easter trip away the head gasket finally went. I managed to limp it home and it drove fine ( besides wanting to overhead every 5 minutes) the decision is now do I just fix up the head and refit it on an engine with those K's or do i swap out the 10P for a later 15p or 16p with way less K's
My thoughts against fitting the head again is the engine had a few very hot cycles and at the end of the day... all of the accessories have done close to 1/2 million K's
Cheers

Mate it depends too on if you are doing it yourself or not. The costs of getting a workshop to do it i would be sourcing a used engine. The later ones aren't really any better for example the 10p heads are more robust ( unless you get a 15 or 16p with a AMC one already fitted) and you can buy an untidy running d2 with a road testable td5 for very little now.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Yeah doing the work myself...

Ignor the cooper... it just the sealant i put in to get it home...you can see the trashed plastic dowels
so at 495, is that bottom end untouched... timing chain ect.
I put an AMC head on my td5 disco at 290, its now 343, just got back from Perth in it , 3800kms across, & 3350 home (direct) it used no oil & never missed a beat towing a camper trailer. i'd be happy if i can get up to half a mill out of it. i just had the auto rebuilt not long ago either...

Very good question! And maybe how often it was changed?
Also if it has been remapped?
Being a 10p maybe not as it should have the MSB ecu which makes it a bit more difficult.
Also if it has the original exhaust manifold? (not leaking).
Still, great to see that sort of life out of the TD5.
I plan on having mine for a few years yet ( Defender, 2002, with 130k)

If it was me, I would put another motor in.
Theoretical life from the TD5 was around 500k so its fair to say this one has theoretically served its life.
Good second hand motors are not to hard to find around the 250km mark and relatively cheap
I think it is Gazk and outback1 on the forum are regularly wrecking Td5 vehicles and would be able to sort you pretty easy.
If you get a 16p and are keeping the vehicle, try to get the EU3 intercooler and ECU with the motor (if it is sourced from a Defender) and be prepared to run an extra wire or 2 for the later Ambient Air Pressure sensor.
Offtrack- forum member has a thread/tutorial.
It isnt necessary to run the 16P but you will enjoy the full potential of the newer motor and ECU refinements.
