    Possible Puma problem thoughts?

Few days ago I saw a bit of smoke on starting and thought " What was that?"
Checked it and it was gone so thought oh hum and did not worry.. I went to a shoot (comp) and at the end of the day I put my gear in the defender and drove the short drive back to the caravan. On startup the car was running like it was missing and it had a bit of a " heart beat".
Very tired I went to the caravan and did not worry too much and forgot about it till the morning. Start up today (next morning) was the same and with the same smoke. now I was concerned, I revved it and the smoke went away but the slight rough run stayed. I took the car for a run at 100 km/h for 10 mins and on my return it was all normal again. I drove it after back home Townsville to Ravenshoe no issues. Worry is twice now recently something odd has happened, what is going on? Hope tomorrow all is normal..
    Cheers

    What year is your Puma?

    Was the 'smoke' black?

I believe the late models have a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that can get 'clogged' if too many short runs are made, as it need to get really hot to burn off the particulates properly... like your run out may have subsequently done...?

    G'Day Pete.
I thought all Aussie Defenders were Euro IV, & had no DPF?

Do you mean the EGR? They need a regular long run to go through the cleaning cycle.
Are your air and fuel filters clear or blocked?

Mine is one of the last ones. It does do many short 10km runs. First time it happened was a few days before, but the second time was the day after a 4 hour drive to Townsville. It had a service from the Land rover specialist in Cairns a few thousand km ago so filters etc should be fine. Smoke I think was grey, it is sometimes hard to tell, the engine was rough ie car shaking a little and smoke out exaust. A big rev and smoke stopped but engine was still rot right. I drove the car a few km up the road and back and engine was fine again. I then drove all the way back home from Townsville again no issues. Clearly it is a cold engine issue, I will try the car in a bit and see it it is playing up again or not.

Ok just tried to start it on cold engine and it was fine thankfully. I hope it was some odd gremlin that wont come again, what might it have been?

As a precaution, i'd drain a small amount from your fuel filter to check for water buildup in the filter.
    Takes a minute to do

Does the filter not have a water sensor?

My Defer (MY12), sorry MY13, does not have a water sensor. My D2 did and have no idea as to why the Defer does not. Its got a water trap but no Alarm.
Take the cover off and unscrew the drain a couple of turns. The fuel will come out the sides as well not just the little pipe, so have a biggish container ready.
Ive recently had problems with water and I've fitted a 2nd filter, will get a water alarm in a couple of weeks.
I'm sure there are a hundred reasons for a bit of smoke, but this would be an easy check you can do your self.
If your only traveling 10 mins regularly then I'd reckon that would be your most probable cause

    Cheers Glen
