    TD5 mufflers.

OK, I've done a search but cannot find an answer to my specific query. I have an '01 Defender TD5 Extreme. Have removed the big central muffler. Happy with the results. So, how much louder would my combo. become with the little resonator removed as well? Cheers.

    Don't do it.

The drone and resonance will be unbearable.
You'll probably find the cabin will become the new resonator.
That was my experience with a 300Tdi CC Deefer.

What info. I have suggests the effect of removing mufflers from 200 and 300 motors is quite different to the TD5 (Sound that is).

Well, unless the exhaust sounds completely different on a defender I can't see a problem.

I had open exhaust on my Disco TD5 and it was hardly noticeable. Performance and economy improvement was definitely noticeable.

If you have doubts fit a good low flow sports muffler....Lukey still make bloody good mufflers.

I've removed all except for the little resonator, however, I drove one on the weekend that had them all removed and I couldn't hear any difference sitting inside driving it at 100k/h or 30k/h. It was a tad louder when it fired up as I was standing outside at the time, and it also had a loud turbo whistle???

I don't think removing the resonator will make any difference in performance, it's a straight through 'can' anyway, so no restriction. Not worth the effort to remove it in my mind.

Probably should also add, that I drove a 300TDi with all cans removed and it was quite different sound with definite drone that I wouldn't put up with.

    middle muffler removal

I replaced the centre muffler with a hot dog. Last checked it was just full of carbon so next time in 15 years will just replace with a straight piece of pipe. Made a difference on my calibrated test hill and held one gear higher. Haven't tried with the rear resonator removed.

    Fair enough.

Most engines drone and resonate without a resonator at the back, but from the other comments above the TD5 might be a little different ?
It might also depend on the pipe diameter.
eg. A 3" system may react differently to the stock size.

With all the positive threads i have to throw a negative in.
I changed out my center on a TD5 110 and couldn't tell the difference in power at all.
Noise though was up. Sounds nice at low speeds but at 110 kph on long trips i have taken to ear plugs otherwise my ears ring.
Anyone actually seen a before and after dyno test to prove there is a difference?
I wonder if some are replacing a center with failing baffles or blockage of some kind and so would then notice the change rather than in my case what was a perfectly good muffler. I was chasing a rattle which i was convinced was a loose baffle but unfortunately i was wrong.

I put a decat pipe on the engine then replaced the centre muffler with a 3 inch unit and left the rear resonator attached.
I recall that there was a performance increase and the noise is not annoying
