Thread: TD5 discovery fitting TD5 defender?

Same engine. Some ancillary items aren't on the Defender - eg wastegate controller. Lower power on Defender - someone else should be able to comment on whether its the ecu map or otherwise.

Yes if you get another 15-20 P engine it will be fine just change the injector codes use the Defender ancillaries as required, if you use a 10P engine you will need to remap the ECU because the injector pressures are different.

Note 10P and 15P etc is the start of the engine number

Thank you for the info, Djam1. Does "just fine" mean that frame place and gearbox will fit identically? And about the injectors codes, how is that done? And will I also be able to put my injectors on it?

Roberto yes it will fit identically I know of no show stoppers that couldn't be changed from the original engine
The injector codes need to be programmed with a Nanocom or equivalent
You could use your injectors but if the donor motor was running fine I would leave it alone and change the codes in the ECU

Why dont you just give your engine a flush and put the head back on presuming that the head is OK?
That said if you can get an engine cheap enough it could be a better way to go

Yes, for the time being, even if I have to buy a new oil cooler element, it is exactly what I'll do. To import a used engine from the UK to Haiti takes time, it is risky for the engine is used and implies a computer based part that will oblige me to take the car to a dealer which, here, are extra expensive and incompetent.

Rob if it is all temporary until you get another motor you could run a copper pipe in the place of the cooler.
I know that there was one company in Australia that was doing this as a fix I think its dodgy as oil overheating in a tuned td5 can be a point of failure.
But for your application you could get one made up locally and run it until your new engine arrives.

Thank again Djam! I will check the oil cooler first, it might be something possible to repair, otherwise I'll check with your solution. For the moment I am stuck with the 3 rusted bolts accessable only from underneath, holding the turbine and the muffler pipe together.

havent read through everyones replies, but...

Disco 2 TD5, 10P 15P 16P bluh bluh, all fit Defender TD5.

*all will need injectors programmed into vehicle, regardless of where the TD5 engine is sourced.
*you leave the a/c compressor connected to vehicle, just unbolt from engine coming out.
*you leave power steering pump connected to vehicle. just unbolt from engine coming out.
*you leave fuel cooler connected to cooling system, just unbolt from engine coming out.
*likely the TD5 from disco is from an auto, unbolt flexplate and adaptor, bolt on flywheel/clutch assembly from old engine.

jobs to do before engine goes in vehicle, if funds allow it
injector harness
get codes from injectors.
cam cover seal.
from cam oring
serpentine belt tensioner
serpentine belt
waterpump
fuel cooler oring seals (if the earlier round style)
replace all cooling hoses
exhaust manifold machine, studs, egr blank
fuel pressure regulator
intercooler hoses
thermostat
viscous fan
radiator

the ..... list.....goes....on..... its a budget thing but a good time to do it all
