Hammer it in to the end of your jack to extend the reach; as it now has further to span to reach the jacking holes in the chassis.

Interesting, I dont recall that page in the instructions, but i have a bottle jack that lifts by the axle and nothing that resembles the part in the picture. Was a different jack used on earlier models?

Defenders should all have a jack like that one in the pictures. If Pumas don't it is due to a cost cutting measure. The jack slots into the holes in the front bullhorns and the rear crossmember. Of course, you need a bottle jack as well, but the proper jack is very handy for some recovery stuff as well as suspension work.

Ahh ok, well I certainly don't have that style of jack at all so this part is of no use with the bottle jack.

I've yet to use a hi-lift jack, but always assumed I would need a bullbar and/or rear bumper with the jacking points built in to use it.

Hi Dave

I tend to use the hi-lift jack on the side of the vehicle - the rock sliders are a good point to lift, as well as bullbar and bumper of course. I can't remember if your 90 had sliders?

Yeah I dont have sliders, only the stock side steps, but I was never supplied with the hi lift jack when I picked up the car anyhow so I'm wondering if puma 90s didn't get it if you got one with Monty. At least I know what that part is now

Yep JLR ditched the old defender jack on pumas. Fortunately I have one from the Tojo days.
Those pin lifters with the old hi lift are definately handy.

Hi-lift jacks are an aftermarket purchase that a lot of people make because they're useful in the bush, especially when you have a puncture and the diffs are buried. I used to keep mine on the rear of the car as you'll see lots of people doing but it kept getting covered in mud and dust so I keep it inside the car now.
