Leaking Rear Pinion Seal on my '95 Defender.....

Gents,

Went out on another shakedown run today in my Defender. Covered some 300>400kms in the Bush, etc and when I got home I discovered that I've now got a leaking Rear Pinion Seal in my Salisbury Rear Diff. I remember reading on somewhere that this is a common problem (is it??)... So, I was wondering what one would expect to pay to have this Rear Pinion Seal replaced? The Car has about 342k on it and the Diff seems ok until u get to around 100k mark and then if u back off lightly on the pedal, u can hear a bit of a winding sound from the diff, so this to me is more related to the Crown Wheel & Pinion.

Heading away on our 1st major trip in it, so I want to get it fixed but unsure what to expect $$ wise. Does anyone have any experience in leaky seal and what they did to fix it, etc?

Many moons ago a mechanic mate of mine did it in his drive way......

The seal is a crush type (somebody will explain it better)

We marked the position of the nut with a centre punch, a mark on the nut and one on the diff housing.

Used a rattle gun to remove the nut, replace the seal, used rattle gun to do the nut up, he went slightly past the centre punch marks, didn’t leak for the remaining 200000km that I had the defender.

Yeah, a mate told me about that method as well..... Will look at getting a price 1st and will from there depending on the price that is....

I assume removing the seal is easy enough?

Dunno.....I was the T/A handing tools to my mate that was under the car

i just replaced my seal recently (September) I posted some pictures if you do a search. Look back to my thread on 11th September in this section. Undoing the pinion nut is the hardest bit.... if you don't have a rattle gun.

Removing the old seal is easy too. Just pry it out

Was there any wear marks on the Pinion Flange that would require a speedy seal at all?

I vaguely remember fitting a speedi sleeve to mine.

There were no marks on the Pinion surface where the seal sits. I just cleaned everything and refitted.

Make sure the mud shield is in place.

Well, got mine fixed yesterday and the Pinion Flange had wear marks in it, so it needed a speedy sleeve..... Also, something I should have checked but never actually thought to was my diff breather - it too was blocked
