Personally I wouldn't be without one. Had a truck once, that used to just die on me as I was driving down the highway. The 'diesel bug' would clog the filters. Put in a racor filter, attached to chassis and never had a problem again.
My county has the water separator near rear wheel, then a water separator/filter which takes a fleetguard FS1234 filter in the engine bay, then the standard fuel filter, before it gets to the injector pump.
