Ford derived engine. The current 2.2 and (five cyl) 3.2 are indeed named "Puma". The 2.4 from the same family was/is also referred to by that name. I recall when we made the call to switch from the 2.4 to 2.2 on Ranger, long before it saw production... actually before we had built representative prototypes... The 2.4 and 2.2 are highly related but obviously not exactly identical. The 2.2 has quite a few upgrades/changes/development over the older 2.4. Then there are the 'generations' within that. I think the MY18 Puma family goes from Gen3 to Gen3.5, at least where a legacy engine isn't required or retained. I'm not familiar with the "Cougar" name in this context so can't comment on that if it is a codename.
Just like the later/current V6 and V8 diesels are "Lion" (again linked to Ford, but slightly differently). The engine family gets a name, then there are different variants within that family, and generational upgrades also.
Most engine families have names, from any manufacturer. 'Astron' is one old example from Mitsubishi...
