    Reducing dust in your Filter

What are the good folks using to limit the dust getting into the air filter during dusty track adventures?

A snorkel inner or outer pre filter sock or cover.
using the factory paper element & blowing out daily with compressor.
washable filter & wash out every couple of days.

Doing a desert crossing soon with a large group & I know there will be times spent coping others dust.

    Cheers
    Dave

    Sounds funny but...

Back off a bit... you all have UHFs. No need to be up each other’s arses.

Other than that the usual suspects tend to work.

You can just bang it out each day or two without a problem (carry a spare)

Just stay back far enough so that the dust has settled or at least most of it has.
A snorkel sock is very helpful as is one of those football inflator needle/gizmos that you can put on the end of your air hose to blow the dust out of your filter at the end of the day or next morning.

*A snorkel will reduce the amount of dust ingress to the air box.
*The snorkel socks are good and easy to clean.
*The standard paper filter is fine and cheap to buy, why not throw in half a dozen.
*You are far safer to brush or tap gently your air filter daily, using compressed air you risk damage to the air filter.
*Also on a Defender, the air box and air filter seals onto each other arent the greatest, use silicone spray on the joints.

I thought yours had a raised air intake??

Either way most fit a raised air intake....fit a nugget kit and it will become a snorkel.

As tombie says, You have comms so put distance between you and the car in front....cross winds makes for very clean driving

Agree with DAZZA, tap or shake the filter, avoid concentrated compressed air, if using compressed air than have a nozzle with the biggest hole (than you will have Tracy led keeping air up to it) and blow from inside out. LOL, I don’t reckon you would have room for a spare air cleaner.

As Dazza postsabove - take a look at the seals.

I attempt to assist the dustproofing of the seals by greasing them with rubber grease when assembling - seems to catch some - I guess vaseline would do if you didn't have the red stuff.

I use the rubber grease and it works well I have also found that genuine airfilters are best with little bypass.
The same cannot be said for certain other brands but in a pinch I will use Mahle or Mann.

If you do go down the path of a filter sock, I have used this one in the past and was very effective, but I then i had to carry cleaner and oil so I could clean at the end of the day (messy job!). Blowing out the genuine paper air filter with compressed air is an easier task.

    Silicone or Rubber grease only.

Vaseline will react and attack the rubber.
