Defender 130 aftermarket air - BTU requirements?

    Learned gents,

Reasearch indicates 18,000-20,000 btu is on the upper end of the scale for light vehicle aircon needs. I'm looking at few units in that range, and a couple up around the 30,000btu range.

Anyone have an aircon background that can chip in on sizing? Or do you run an aftermarket unit in hot weather? Will anything over 20,000 just be a waste of capacity?

The 130 cab has tinted glass and is getting the right royal aucoustic and thermal treatment (dynamat + 6-10mm foam), but it will still need to be liveable for long periods containing a family of four during 45C days....peak summer use obviously.

Some choices below becauses posts with pictures are always better.........location will be upper rearmost postion in the cab.

    Cheers,

    Jason

It appears you do have the 12113. Neat instal.....with less roof to play with I was planning to run my condenser in the usual spot up front.

Does it do the job in summer? Scrutinizing the pictures I can't tell if you have thermal insulation installed.

    Many thanks,

    Jason

Thanks Weeds, I've poured all through those posts now.

I noticed your unit is around the 20kbtu mark.....any complaints in a QLD summer?

I have a formula king EV2208 18,000btu in my 110 wagon. It's very well insulated including foam and dynamat on roof etc.

It's plenty cold enough on all but the very hottest (40+) days. I like it cold though so i would probably go a bit bigger next time. But....the down side is that mine is already way too cold even on its lowest setting on the not so hot days. The thermostat setup is pretty crude so you have to keep switching it off otherwise you freeze. You can only run it a few minutes at a time so this gets very annoying.

Like weeds mine is not working too well at the moment so is suspect it's losing a bit of gas. I had the same problem before and following a top up it was back to icy cold again.

One of the best mods I have done.

    Thanks gents,

I ordered the 22,220btu air chief model.

I went with this model as it is suited for a mini-bus, there will be bulk thermal insulation added and the 130 cab is 2/3 the size of a 110 wagon. Additionally I am removing the rear window which will allow the entire rear cab panel to be insulated. The evaporator unit is narrow enough to still leave full height head clearance in the rear for passengers, thin enough for most humans to sit under it in the centre rear seat without touching.

Commenced stripping the headling & existing cheap foam insulation to prep the cab for the evaporator.

I installed a 22500 in the top back of my 130s cab plumbed to the standard parts- twin blower. I live in Alice and it works well unless we get into mid 40s. Also dynametted and foamed the ceiling
