If it's to the filler hole on level ground that's it.
There is a type of sump in the nose under the diff lock dogs that would hold a bit of oil so I wouldn't worry .

Morning all,
I decided to drop the transfer gearbox oil myself for the first time on the weekend which proceeded without issue until filling up. Mine is a suffix G, therefore should take 2.8L if I'm not mistaken. On re-filling I have been only able to replace approx 2L of oil back into the unit. Vehicle is on level ground and I also took it for a quick spin around the block (to let it settle in) and then tried to top up but can't get any more in.
Seeking some guidance from those more skilled in the arts than I.......
Thanks
Hilly

SupporterThe only thing way I have seen an LT230 take 2.8 litres is if it has an extended sump

SupporterThanks djam1. It would appear that my referencing the Haynes workshop manual has uncovered an error in printing.
I've now managed to find another few sources/tutorials which are noting a capacity of 2.2L, but that you can't put much more than 2L in when re-filling (due to the previously mentioned 'sump'). Comforting to now know.
I have seen the extended sumps and considered, as the cost isn't over the top. Have you had much experience with them djam1?
Cheers

I have one on a Defender not sure it is necessary but it does give a little additional oil capacity.
They were developed by Ray Wood as additional cooling and capacity for the Roamerdrive Overdrive
Makes it easier to take the transfer case out as it makes the bottom of the box flatter

SupporterI've always assumed that an LT230 capacity will be the same regardless of vehicle install, just some minor differences to gearing/gear types.
RAVE says: Defender and D1 2.3Lt. But for the D2, 2.3lt (dry) 2.0lt refill
Arthur.
