Indicator Cancelling -- steering wheel alignment

I just fitted a new steering drop arm today .. wow did the old one not want to come off !!

But after I fitted it my steering wheel is about 30-45 degrees left to go straight (like in picture) ... which I am pretty sure should just be adjusted back to straight using the threaded ends on the steering linkage.. but I ran out of time today and drove home.

What I noticed was that my indicators worked perfectly (kind of like a normal car) where as before I replaced the drop arm (and with steering wheel straight to drive straight) it would tend to cancel right indicators if I breathed to heavily and I usually had to cancel left indicators myself. I have seen various threads about a ring that can break that does the cancelling, but why would it work properly with the wheel on an angle for straight? Is it possibly my steering wheel is actually installed not where it should be?

Coz ur steering wheel is out of alignment. I would like to suggest u turn ur wheels straight ahead. Remove the drop arm again and straighten ur steering wheel up. It probably turned when u were playing around with it. Now refit the drop arm. Tie the wheel to the straight ahead position to do this or get someone to hold it there. If u have an air bag, DONT spin the wheel as u will break the clockspring coil. That is the only reason ur wheel is out of alignment. That is also why the indicators arent cancelling correctly.

    Cheers Rod

Only slightly off, cant you just pop the steering wheel off and refit it straight?

I remember the drop arm having a locating spline. If a straight swap, box should still be near centered when wheels straight. Thats if it was set up properly to begin with.

If the drop arm is pointing straight ahead with the wheels straight I would be tempted to just clock the steering wheel a fraction and locate the cancel ring whilst the wheel is off.

Not always easy to get the wheel off though, you might need a puller!

The arm is splined such that it only fits in one orientation, removing it won't achieve anything. The only cause of the indicator symptoms is if the cancelling ring was never seated correctly into the tabs on the wheel.

Adjust the tie rod until you have the same number of turns from (wheels) straight ahead to either lock. Then take the steering wheel off, make sure the blue cancelling ring is oriented so the slots are vertical (from memory, it will be obvious - check the orientation of the tabs on the wheel) then replace the wheel so that it is straight.

Edit: The drop arm won't be straight ahead, it points slightly to the driver's side.

The thing is my indicators are working properly and cancelling like this. They never did before I swapped.

Also the drop arm had 4 locating splines so it won't go on slightly wrong. It will go on a lot wrong but then it would be able to steer both ways.

Looks like I need to pull the steering wheel to see what's going on with the cancelling ring.

Thanks Dervish. I replied just before I read your response. That sounds like a good plan.

On the blue ring, there is a small pointer sticking out at 90 degrees to the slots. That needs to be pointing to the left of the vehicle, i.e. the indicator stalk..

Thanks for the help. Looks like my steering wheel had been put on wrong or the blue ring had slipped because it was jammed on the two metal tabs coming out of the back of the wheel. Just happened to be in the right position with the wheel at about 45 degrees. Straight now and indicators behaving.
