My guess, ignition switch at end of key barrel. Fairly common fault, not too bad to DIY fix. A search will find quite a few threads. I posted a couple for similar reasons, if that helps the search.

Looks like mine is starting to do the same. Is it like the solenoid tries to pull
in the first time, turn the key back and then it cranks over and fires?

    TIA Ian

    +3 ignition switch.

    Also as some additional info....

*if the key is left in the ignition, sometimes the imobiliser gets confused and wont allow vehicle to start.
*You lock the vehicle, then unlock and its good to go.
    Regards
    Daz

    Thx Dazza

Mine also locks all the doors once or twice a month, when I remove the key from the ignition, so I am paranoid about
leaving the key in the ignition without first winding the window down, in case it locks the car on me. I'll talk to my
local LR guy about it at the next service.
    Regards Ian

+4 for the ignition switch. Mine rattled apart along the GRR, used gaffa tape to hold it all together until I made it to Darwin and wrestled a new one in
