    Inadvertant hazard light operating

My son has the our defender up at Ayers Rock, went up the Oodnadatta track and the hazard lights come on when going over heavy corrugations, without the button being pushed. If he turns the key off and restarts it it will cancel the lights until he hits the next lot of bad road. He removed the fuse until he hit the bitumen and has had no further trouble.
It happened to me a couple of times on rough stuff this year, but I forgot about it as came home on the bitumen. The vehicle still locks with the fob, except the blinker lights don't flash. You cannot cancel the hazards by pushing the switch again.
So the question is, is the switch a momentary switch that may have a loose connection and turn the hazards on? Or where else does he look?

Happens in Discovery because of inertia switch under bonnet.

It thinks you have had an accident, hit something hard enough and it cuts off power to fuel cut off solenoid.

Would be the same I imagine, not sure where the inertia switch in defender would be, which model defender is it?

If no-one can tell you where it is off the top of their head Ill have a look on my defender in the morning.

    Yes, it's the inertia switch.
It's on the firewall, in the middle, slightly to the LHS of the car (Passenger side) IIRC.
It looks like a black long box with a rubber cap on top.

I had this issue with mine @~20,000km. LR dealer fix was to put another tek screw in it. Have not had a problem since.

Sorry for the delay but I couldn't get on the stupid internet with the computer. Thanks for that info, I will tell him. It is a 2012 puma. If it is the inertia switch why won't it shut the engine down when it activates? Or is it because it is only a short pulse that goes to it.
    Thanks again Lindsay

...it will for a severe impact.
There is a few 'crash input circuit - short to ground or open'. Diagnostic Trouble Codes B10A2-14 and B1206-00

The circuit diagram shows this circuit, which runs parallell to the ignition circuit to the ECM.
If switch is open circuit, ECM shuts the show down.

This is all very interesting. I had a similar experience with my 2010 Puma 130 dual cab. I was heading south from Torrens Creek over pretty hard corrugations when we fell through a bull dust hole and hit very hard on the far side step up to hard road again. We were towing heavy trailer at the time. All the lights went on as described above plus the trailer light at the bottom of the instrument panel. It was only after the motor was shut down and restated that all warning lights disappeared. There hasn’t been any reoccurrence despite plenty of corrugated roads since. It was obviously the thump in the bull dust hole that set it off.
