    Annoying Little Squeak

This squeak when I went over small bumps made me bonkers.
The wife, who has fantastic hearing reckoned it came from somewhere near the passenger glove box.
We thought it must me some sort of plastic squeak, it was high pitched and difficult to pinpoint.
Despite trying for ages to work out where it came from, we were unsuccessful and put up with it for 1000kms.
Finally getting home later on, and using a mate we accidentally discovered the source.

It comes from the bonnet hinge!

So we sprayed it with some wd40 (thats all I had in the toolbox) and the noise disappeared. What a relief.
It came back some weeks later after some rain which washed the wd40 away.
Yesterday, I smothered the hing with vaseline. I dont know what else to use.
The lithium grease you can buy is usually white, which wont look good good on a dark defender.

Also on later 2.2lt as the door/lock/hinges "bed in" the door and door seal develop a little squeak as you drive.

For all plastics and rubbers inside and engine bay on a Defender, silicone spray (must be one that is compatible for rubber plastic) is your friend.
Externally, lanolin spray is good for plastics/rubber

Products such as crc, wd40 will deteriorate plastics/rubber over time.

I suffer from Squeak/Rattle phobia. Pity me, I can't imagine why I bought a Defender...

The clutch pedal squeaks quite loudly, but completely randomly. It'll be bad this week and probably not at all next week, but it will come back again. Same with the rattle which seems to be inside the B pillar, right by my ear. Comes and goes...

The door rubber squeaks I can deal with, I know how to fix them, it's the mystery ones that drive me nuts.

I bought a brand new GPS unit last week, came in the box with a rattle between the cradle and unit, fixed with a small bit of foam tape. It wasn't expensive and you get what you pay for...

No not really.... owners become tone deaf to the common squeaks / rattles.

    [...]/QUOTE]

This is your door catch/striker. when its sounding like its in your B pillar: open the door, twist the little plastic roller thing, close the door and drive on. Usually results in immediate cessation of the B pillar rattle.

When you get home adjust the part of the door latch attached to the B pillar and the rattle will be gone for a while...

I just replaced the strikers and repositioned them to hold the doors more firmly closed. The squeaking (or more like the gobbling of a turkey) is now gone!

I can now hear all of the other strange and wonderful sounds the deefer makes .
