Nah, I’m just tired of the Toyota bias (even on this forum!) Because in my experience it’s totally unfounded.

I’m totally bemused at how so many people blindly cheer for a vehicke/brand when they haven’t even driven it! Or against a vehicle/brand when they haven’t even driven it!

Like most I enjoyed seeing Collingwood lose the Grandfinal but I did feel for Nathan, he’s turned a corner and he probably deserved to win.

We are using 2 4WD's on this trip, the D2a is hauling a 1.5t boat driven by me and the missus is driving the 79 series towing the van.
Each time we pull up for fuel I do a fuel consumption on both trucks.
The D2a V8 uses about 22l per hundred and the 79 V8 is using 15l per hundred, We are travelling slow 85 to 90 kph because my 4l V8 doesn't appreciate 40c plus heat.
I have owned pretty much every brand of 4WD over the years including a couple of series landrovers so I don't have any particular favorite brand, I just buy what i consider to be the best value at the time.
The 79 series I bought came with a heap of quality accessories includind an ali lock up canopy with full length roofrack an was already setup for touring and there wasn't a defender that could match it for value at that time.
I thought that I would regret buying the 79 series but it just keeps on impressing me.
My young bloke bought one of those Great Wall 4WD utes about 5 years ago and he has flogged the guts out of it and it is still running perfectly so its Not about the brand its all about what you get for your money regardless of brand.
I have absolutely NO loyalty for any particular brand (except for my burbon) for Anything I buy, I just buy whatever I feel is the best value for money at the time of purchase and I think that the 79 series is great value for my 30k because it does exactly what I bought it for with ease.
A defender would most likely do the same job But I don't think that it would do it as well.

Cheers Trout, thanks for the explanation. It sounds like the D2a is the one to let go of! And then if you were driving the cruiser at the speed limit you’d be getting more like 18-20L/100km which is what I would expect.

I don't think that I will ever part with my disco because firstly I will never get back what I have put into it and because I enjoy driving it so much.
The 79 series is a great truck But I still prefer to drive the disco, Ain't people weird sometimes

So trout owns a 79, yet you call bull ****? Great post.

I live in Toyota and Holden ville. If you don't own at least one of the above your labelled, well, lets leave that to the imagination.

Anyway, I always try to keep an open mind about everything and not pick best/worst or label stuff too much. I find it interesting that people have such strong views sometimes.

Here's my experiences (remember I own a 2013 D90 and a '89 Perentie) I think I'll go car by car:
D90
- VERY Short - great for carparks and tight offroading
- a bit bouncy and skittish at speeds
- not as good at the 110 at high speed towing, although the tow ball being so close to the rear axle makes it lots good in many ways.
- I have a 150hp tune, so moves along fine.
- Space is a little limited for driver but I like the closeness of the window particularly offroad
- AC is avg. Heater is amazing.
- great seats.
- 10L/100 empty. and anything up to 18L/100km fully loaded towing 3+tonnes at 110km/hr

110
- rides nice, heck I'll put it up against a brand new dual cab for ride.
- slow - could go a turblow.
- plenty of space for the driver.
- lack of AC but meh.....
- 10 to 12L/100kms towing/empty/loaded/doesn't seem to care.

V8 Troopy (no i dont own one - but drove onne)
- once it's loaded to the hilts i guess it rode okish
- didn't feel all that powerful to me, made plenty of powwwwer noise which was cool but didn't really move
- driver space? for such a big vehicle I was disappointing, I would say it's comparable to the defender but I didn't enjoy the seats for hours on end.
- Big white bonnet that glared at me YUCK! paint it black or something..... argh..... especially when you lose your sunglasses.
- 20L/100kms was the best I got from it towing - and I was trying to be nice to it.
- Noise was a little better than the defender but could be contributed largely to the highway tyres I guess.

I think it's hard to compare the 3 effectively. They are 3 very different trucks with different purposes. The argument that coils are better than leaves is on shaky ground for me - I recently put paras on my series 3 and it drives as smooth and nice as any coiler. Yes approach and departure angles are different I guess.

I feel that pricing of Toyota is very high considering what it has/is. However, I guess you pay for the privilege of the network of parts and repairers.

Something I've never understood was the mantality that you buy a brand new car (dont care what it is) but then drive straight to the aftermarket shop to put new suspension, diffs, driveline, seats, etc in it. WHY did you knowingly buy a car that had crappy suspension??????????????

at the end of the day I dont think you can choose a "best" vehicle. Different ppl will want different things whether they are justified or not, they will like different stuff and that's what keeps the market competitive I guess. We are all looking to enjoy the same thing - getting out in the country and enjoy places that not everyone can get to - whether we drive a LR, Jeep, Toyota, Nissan, Sangyong, or a Sony, we should just get over it and enjoy

We are all totally wierd! There's no way I can part with my 98 Defender either! I get it. And I do understand why people like 70 series Toyotas. ...But it makes total sense to me that you prefer driving the Disco ...have you owned a Defender?

Yup! ...all in the spirit of camaraderie ...But I'd still pull his 79 out of a bog anytime with my Defender
