Toyo Open Country (get a pretty good rap) and Maxis Bighorn both do 255/85/16’s........from memory.

Have run both of those tyres on my MY2013 DCPU.

The Toyos are on now (the deathly expensive official imports, not the cheaper grey imports). The (expensive) Toyos do seem better on and offroad as compared to the much less expensive Maxxis. Worth the price difference - that'd be a tough one to call.

Did I mention the Toyo's are expensive. The inside sidewall of the Maxxis are closer to the rear coil top mount, as compared to the much greater clearance offered by the (expensive) Toyos - when mounted on the stock Boost Alloy wheels without spacers.

I know I haven't mentioned that I reckon any tyre in this size (255/85R16) works well on my Defender. It lifts the overall gearing just the right amount with the added oomph of a nice BAS tune.

Bridgestone has the AT D697 dueler in 225/95 16 that might be useful if you want an all-terrain. 255/85's seem to be only MT's

    Hi County4.4,
I'm curious why you don't want bf muds?
I have been running them for 2 yrs with no problems.

    Hey lounat58
Was just concerned about noise when they get more worn.
Also 90% of time on bitumen. The rest on beach sand launching the boat and fishing the remote beaches of S.A.
Was hoping for something a little less aggressive.

Best tyres i ever had were 33/10/15 on a series 3 we travelled Aus in years ago.
    Unstoppable on the beach.
Even towed an old jayco dove through some pretty full on sand dunes.
    Thanks for all advice

But on a Deefer with all that wind, engine, driveline, rattling and creaking noise plus the howl from the Maxi low range gears I never used to notice.
