    Radius Arm Rear Bushes

I went to get a Roadworthy today and have to change the front trailing arm rear bushes. I'm no mechanic but prepared to give it a go, if need be. Before I decide to do it or have it done, are there any tricks/issues I should be aware of? Is it as simple as unbolting, removing, replacing and bolting back on or much more than that?

    Thanks, Howard

Hi Howard, just need to clarify, on a defender the bars up the front are radius arms and the one down the back are trailing arms.
If you need to change the rear radius arm bushes it is quite simple if done in the right sequence.
Park on hard level ground, chock all wheels, chock the fronts front and back, car in gear, hand brake on .
Do one arm at a time.
Remove bolts on the front of the radius arm, lower radius arm from diff housing, you then can move the arm forward , remove radius arm and replace bushes.
Reinstatement is rear first and front last. Lining up the front bolt holes can be testing, try some undersized bar to help alignment.

Thanks for the info. The ones needing to be changed are at the front. They appear to be bolted at the front and, looking at a photo I took, maybe the rear section can slide forward into the front part? There is a single bolt holding it. If I can work out how I will post a photo with this reply.

In the first photo you undo the big nut and having previously undone the front and dropped one side of the track rod off, that is shown in the second photo , all should come free.

If you have a stabiliser bar you’ll have to undo where it mounts to the chassis so you can swing it down for the rear bolt
I find it’s easier to undo the large nut on the radius arm before the bolts up front as it stops the radius arm trying to turn as you undo the large rear nut which is pretty tight I also take the track rod right off ( you have to take the keeper bracket off the diff )
If your using super pro bushes the grooved bush goes on the rear

Have you checked out the "Trailer fitter tool box" videos on YouTube ? I have found them pretty helpful.

98% of all Land Rovers built are still on the road.
The other 2% made it home.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.
