That plastic clip is only a factory assembly aid, you don't need to fit it. The slave cyl will hold the rod in.

Simple enough I know. I have done it on a couple of my landies before and also on my defender 10 years ago. This time when I removed the slave cylinder the push-rod came out as well with the plastic retainer. I have spent over three hours trying to put the rod and plastic retainer back into the gear box. I have used a spark plug socket as well as copper tubing over the rod to locate the plastic clips into the right spot but no luck.
Any ideas please............Not gearbox removal

Thanks Terry. I spoke to a land rover mob in Melbourne and they gave me the impression it was necessary in the Defender to stop the rod from dropping down.If I can do without it that would be great.

its surplus to requirement.
a bit of turntable grease will hold it but if you really want the clip..
cut a bit of 3/4 inch garden hose, cut out a section so you are left with a kind of T shape.
wrap the T up and over the clip so the top of the T holds the ears of the clip open and the circle of the clip is in the center of the hose.
place the pushrod into the clip and hose.
insert the lot and if you do it right the ears will walk over the fork and the T piece will jump up out of the way, the rod will stay in place and its done.
sometimes you need to use a piece of 10mm airline or irrigation tube over the rod to push on the clip and hold it while you extract the hose.
you can also get it with a pair of long nose long handle 90 degree needle nose pliers.

Not sure about this as my clips need to be pushed together and then expand when in place.

even easier.
a piece of rubber hose and some dental floss.
put the clip on the rod, put the clip and rod into some hose.
wrap a turn of dental floss onto the clip teeth and gently pull them together with a pair of pliers tighten the dental floss to hold them. tie the dental floss off down at the end of the hose.
push it all into place, release then pull out the dental floss, pull out the hose.
done.

The spring in the slave cyl. holds the rod in contact with the release fork.
That little plastic clip is not worth the stress it causes.
