    300tdi temperature gauge

What sort of accuracy do defender owners see with the original gauge?

Mine is about 4mm from the hot colour when the temp at the sender is about 93/4,
This is with a digital I.R. Tool.
I've bought a standalone temp gauge as I'm having cooling/gauge problems, but what are others seeing with their stock gauge?
And as I side note, it won't cool down on the gauge much at all until I shut the engine off for a couple minutes, even idling for 15 mins with the a/c off,
Shut off for two mins, under half...

    Cheers James

Don't have a Defender(D1 here), but when I was doing my checks on the tdi, after I fitted a VDO sender(1Gauge gauge), I wanted to be sure of accuracy too.
Measured using an IR thermometer, but using the IR thermometer you can get varying readings all over the motor.
I mainly concentrated on the head area, and found at the thermostat housing(where my sender is located), temps on IR gun was spot on with the VDO sender(and 1Gauge reading).
But I also spot checked various parts of the head, overall at the same temps(~83ish), but some specific spots read over 90C .. whilst at idle most areas(and gauge) read 83C.
Block I remember was much cooler(more like 60's - 70's) depending where the spot was placed.

300TDI era gauges are well known to be useless.

the std gauge rarely moves till it's too late.

i use a capillary gauge and the hottest its ever gotten is 97deg pulling a 1 ton van up a very long hill

    generally it's at 89deg to 92deg

when it goes higher, it recovers quickly

i wouldnt trust a std gauge as far as i could throw it after reading what i have read on here over the years

I can only only agree inc, the current VDOs are made in India and quality seems to be just as acceptable as the originals IMHO.

A little awkward to install in a tdi with the required factory sleeve, but quite doable.

Find a good spot through the bulkhead/firewall and take care not to overtwist the capillary line when installing. Purchase with the longest capillary (I think it is 4m) . I found it best to install the brass sleeve first and to not fully tighten it and then fit the capillary before tightening the sleeve, If you tighten the sleeve first it will reduce the inner diameter to the extent that the capillary will not fit - if this does occur you can clear it with an appropriate metric drill bit.
