The hose that blew on mine was the very short one that joins onto the intercooler.

    Hi all,

Thanks for all your input so far. I managed to limp it back the 150 or so kms home yesterday and managed to track down the culprit this morning.

As expected it is a turbo hose - it is the one between turbo and intercooler on turbo side of engine bay. Seems it was fouling on the bolt on top of the steering box.

Is this a common issue? Any fixes to ensure the replacement doesn't meet the same fate?

Any tips for installing the new hose also? Is there an easiest way without removing too much gear

    Thanks again.

    Gus

That’s the most common failure on 2.4s
Replace hose with good quality silicone
Not too difficult to remove replace but depending on km now might be the perfect time to remove and clean manifold / EGR valve etc

Later models (2.2s) have a metal bracket to hold hose up from dropping onto steering box/ linkage - I just used some cable ties, you’ll find the silicone hoses drop less than OEM

Glad to hear you got home ok.

Yes it is a common well known condition.

Buy some silicone hoses and make sure it stays away from that bolt. I found when I changed mine I rotated the rear end of the pipe a little where it bolts on and it lifted up off the steering knuckle bolt mine was rubbing on. I also know one of the other Brisbane club members used cable ties to pull his up away from the bolt.

The only parts I had to pull out to change it was the airbox (which mine fouls on the air con line) and it is then doable.

There is an update available that replaces the hose with a pipe.

That's a good point I hadn't considered and at 94k definitely a good opportunity to do it. How significant a job is it to clean the manifold / EGR valve etc? - I threw a catch can on the car soon after I got it (5k ago) but undoubtedly the manifold will be gunked up from before. Doable to do lot in a day - manifold looks like it would be easy enough? Or would need to remove lots of other stuff to get into it and best get a professional to do?

Will definitely be using some cable ties as you have to get tube up away from the steering box. Thanks for the tip.

    Cheers,

    Gus

Manifold / EGR valve and hoses etc is only a couple hours work
    Grab new manifold gaskets
I disabled the EGR on mine via BAS so I blocked off the valve to manifold pipe

It took longer to clean the gunk out of the manifold
    Than remove/ replace stuff

Legend. I'll grab some gaskets when getting hoses.

    Thanks mate.
