Possibility of water entering snorkel and airbox?

I'm fitting a Mantec snorkel to my Defender with Nugget's sealed box and tube.

Dumb question. ...The original plastic air breather tube from the side vent incorporates a small catchment area and drain at the bottom, so any water that might enter the side vent is prevented from continuing to the airbox.

With Nugget's sealed system, what happens if a bit of water enters the snorkel head, say in heavy driving rain? Does the impeller and drain hole in the OE air filter box remove the water?

I note that some are blocking the drain hole in the OE filter housing... how would any water escape if you do this??

Has anyone considered installing a Donaldson separator in the inlet tube, or is it unnecessary?

Or instal an aftermarket air filter box one-way drain valve such as:

    rain entering snorkel

If you have a look at the inside of the snorkel head you will see that it is designed so that rain entering the inlet will hit the rear of the inside of the head, run down the inside and flow out of the water outlets at the bottom of the head.

If you are still concerned you could face the snorkel backwards or fit the seperator but most 4X4's dont have them AFAIK.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks, however the Mantec snorkel has a mushroom type head and the air intake is from under the mushroom and at the rear of the head.

With the Mantec RAI head, air is taken from the bottom and any debris and water taken in gets spit out the back.

If it is raining That hard that you are worried about water entering the engine it is most likely that you will be unable to see through it anyway and would have pulled over to wait it out

Interesting thanks, I hadn't read that anywhere. Sounds like a good design.

I guess rain can also enter at the back of the head whilst stationary, but then I assume it would run down and out the sides, not down the centre. ...also would be thrown out the back once moving...

Does the vent at the back drain directly into the main part of the snorkel??

From memory this was an issue for a Poptop owner pretty sure he has this RAI...when the roof is up water flows straight into the vent at the back....only an issue if a Poptop is fitted.

I guess maybe for that particular situation it may be so that water may get in through the rear opening but generally, water shouldn't really get in there in substantial quantities. The newer Mantec designs are pretty much similar in concept to the older, metal mushroom heads. Heck, Mantec even produces a modern, plastic mushroom head as well.

I have that Mantec fitted (since 2013). I also have Wayne's sealed intake and i sealed the drain in the air filter housing. While i don't inspect regular, i've never found water in the air filter housing. Might be a consequence of good luck or that in reality it is not really a problem.

Mine is sealed all the way, including the air box. I wipe a bit of rubber grease on the air filter lips.

I change the head to a Donaldson topspin. Noway rain water can enter the snorkel

If you have a bit of water in the air intake,no big deal. The engine will burn that away. Actually I was told water mist can decarb the piston head

    Cheers
