A question for Defender knowlegable people

Which model years of 130's came with a Salisbury rear diff, disc brakes all round and a R380 ?

I'm currently 'between Land Rovers' and considering another project, there was an 'extra cab' Td5 130 sold on Gumtree a couple of months ago ................................. perfect but as rare as rocking horse excrement.

Not certain, but salisbury axles were used from the very first lwb coil sprung Landrovers, so from the first 130, disc rear from about 1992-3, R380, I think from 1989 (not sure). The only ones that changed before the end of Defender production were the salisbury ended about 2002 and the R380 2007.

Someone will correct what I have wrong I hope!

A question for Defender knowlegable people

Yep, R380 started with 300TDI and ended with the TD5. My late 200TDI has LT77.

And as John says around 2002/3 when JLR revised/improved the TD5, they downgraded the rear axle and dropped the Salisbury.

Sounds like 'the pick of the litter', IMO the Salisbury/metric Dana 60 is streets ahead of the Rover/P38 diff but in all fairness I haven't heard about lots pf P38 diff failures.

They might be streets ahead but offroad the Salisbury hangs a lot lower and therefore gets caught up on a lot of obstacles. Most tracks build up a Hump/mound in the middle of the track and depending on the height of this mound depends on whether u start dragging your diff pumpkin and thus potentially bringing u to a halt (track depending)...

I know people will say u can just straddle the hump/wheel ruts but sometimes this is not possible when u have high banks either side and u have no choice but stick to driving the wheel ruts...

You can shave up to 12 mm off the bottom of the Salisbury quite easily using an angle grinder (there are other options allowing for the removal of up 25mm, however welding is then required).

You will need an aftermarket diff cover. - ARB make a good one which has it's own drain plug.

I have done this mod (basic shave)

No hang ups in 10 years.

    Momentum is the key.

I actually took close to 19mm off the bottom of the Sals safely without resorting to welding the bottom.
But a HD cover is mandatory for that mod.
