    110 s/w Xtreme-Luigi

A few months ago I was driving between Tamworth and Singleton to pick up some of my belongings from my dads house, when I saw a Defender on the side of the road for sale.
I was not really in the market for one but thought I would take a gamble on this one.
This is all I knew about it when I saw it briefly before agreeing to buy it.

    1999 TD5 110 S/W Xtreme.
Engine was not running due to a timing chain that had broken.
    It had some hail damage.
Had paint fade on all the top surfaces of panels.
413,000kms (replaced engine at around 250,000kms
The chassis seems pretty clean and rust free.
There is some rust in the footwells which will require some attention, but I did expect that for a 20 year vehicle.
It had $6k spent on it in the last 12 months which included- tyres, shocks, transfer case exchange/rebuild, service of most regular serviceable parts.

Considering some of these pros and cons we agreed on $3k which turned into $3.7k by the time I got it trucked to 4WD Industries.
The person I bought it off loved this vehicle and had owned it from new. He called it Lue(Looey) and I have decided to make a slight change on the name to Luigi.

It spent a few weeks in the workshop at 4WD Industries.
I recived a phone call after a few days with positive news. It was not the timing chain but instead had seized idler and tensioner bearings.
With these replaced I asked them to go over the whole vehicle to see what else needed doing. They soon after got back to me with a list of must change/fix and optional fixes.
    So this is a list of the other things I got done;
    injection harness
gaskets for parts of the engine
    EGR blanked off
    fuel pressure regulator block
    full oil service with filters
    radiator
    radiator hoses
    78 deg thermostat
    water pump
    coolant
    pitman arm
    tie rod end
    wheel alignment
    diff pinion seal
    wiper blades
    hubs repacked
    new axles in the rear
    drive flanges in the rear
    a few other smaller parts.

    Total cost with labour $5300

Total running cost so far $9k

    Items needing fixing immediately after pickup from 4WD Industries;
    Air con
fuel gauge- reads empty all the time- suggested fuel sender

My initial thoughts of driving it back to Singleton were,
    power steering is nice.
    These brakes are good.
The Perentie had a lot more arm/elbow/leg room.
Geez I wish this air con was working (January/February heatwave)
This sounds different to a Perentie.
Gear changes are close together (compared to the Perentie).

Had rain on the way home and it made the paint seem better

While I had a bit of time, I decided to start cleaning the vehicle as it was rather dirty.

The rear storage area- I know it doesn't look cleaner but it was.

I had a 4 hour trip back home near Tamworth.
On the way I hit a decent sized hail storm in Tamworth-Just what you want when you have just picked up your car from the mechanics.
    IMG_2602.jpg
There were some loud noises on the roof and I am sure there were a few extra dents put into the vehicle that day. The photo doesn't really do justice the size of some of the hail.

During the trip I averaged about 10L/100km.
I also noticed that the speedo lights were not working so I went off engine noise for my speed that night.

The next day after getting home I started on pulling the seats out as they needed a good scrub down.

I used Sards wonder soap and applied it using a bristle brush and a toothbrush.
Left it sit for about 1 minute before washing it off with the brushes and the hose on high pressure(jet).
The amount of dirt coming out was crazy.
These took 2 days in the sun to dry properly.

I will upload more photos of the seats later in place.

While the seats were out I started cleaning the interior including the headlining.
I think I did this 2 times (making a total of 3 times).
The headlining really needs another cleaning but it will do for now as it is still a lot better than before.
Before cleaning- well after one rough clean.

After cleaning. note there were still several areas that got more attention later. These photos are with it still wet which makes it look better and cleaner.

I pulled apart the dash to inspect the speedo lights- they were both blown which I found a bit odd but anyway decided to order some white LED replacements for the speedo and instruments.
I saw online that they recommend using tweezers for pulling out the speedo lights and for re-installation.
However, I found this too hard with the ones I had at home and found a quarter inch socket-11/32 deep socket, to work a treat.

    Before-no speedo lights

I ordered white LED dash light kit-about $20 delivered.
    IMG_2962.jpg

    And after
    IMG_2963.jpg
not much brighter but it is slightly. With the LED lights you sometimes put them in the wrong way but it only takes about 20 seconds tops to pull them out, turn them the opposite way and re-install.
It took about 20 minutes to pull the dash panel off, pull out the old lights, install LED lights and reinstall the dash panel.

After driving the vehicle around for a few weeks I decided it was time to pull the seats out again and to install marine carpet throughout.
    The reasons I went for marine carpet are;
    Cheap
I think it looks good (I know others don't)
The rubber, insulation, moldings were all old and breaking apart.
I needed to try to quieten the vehicle down, especially from rocks hitting underneath (yes I know it is not sound deadener but it will help).
    It is readily available.

First, I needed to pull out the old and clean.
