Clunk and jump when shifting from neutral to first at a stop

    Hi all,

New little quirk has presented itself today in my 2011 2.4 Puma. When I depress the clutch and shift into first it makes a decent clunk and jerks ever so slightly forwards.

If I keep the clutch depressed and go between 1st and neutral it only does it the first time but if I let go of the clutch, then depress it again, the clutch is quite loud as it disengages/engages and then the jerk happens.

Any ideas? Was thinking clutch slave master - fluid is full and clean though?

    Cheers

Early Defender Puma clutches had a weakness and LR released an upgraded clutch. Is yours the original? Has it been serviced?

Unsure - second owner with 90k on the clock. I assume it has not been upgraded. When I had the TC rebuilt and adaptor shaft done by Bruce Davis he said it seemed fine, though that was 5,000km or so ago.

Definitely would make some sense given it also has the hallmark clutch rattle at low revs under load.

Other thing I was thinking could be is something to do with the slave cylinder potentially?

*90K on the orig clutch means its likely on its way out and time to do the lot.
*It sounds like the slave is failing.
*There has been an update for the slave and all connecting valve out for quite a long time.
*When the adapter shaft was done you only remove the transfer case, so the clutch doesnt get seen.
*But I normally suggest on a 2.4 with that km's to do the adapter shaft and clutch at the same time.
*Dont buy a genuine clutch regardless of how many updates have come along.
*The last dozen or so clutches I have fitted SACH branded kits, they seem good and have a good feel to them (got to trust them Germans sometimes I guess)

*The clutch rattle is at idle in neutral with clutch pedal out
    Regards

Thanks Dazza. Yeah there is not any perceptible rattle at idle and I can't recreate it all the time - it only rattles when in low rpm under load. Its almost like the slave is sticking now and then I thought perhaps.

Any recos where to get done in Sydney? What sort of labour hours are there involved?

Also any recommendations (other than yours DiscoMick on AP HD) on clutch - how are the Clutch fix and LOF ones if anyone has experience?

    Cheers

When I got ours replaced I was quoted about $1600 for the LR upgraded clutch, but I went with an AP HD clutch instead for about $2400 from memory. No problems since.

My 2012 2.2 130 has done that since new, althought the clunk is very mild and the clutch isnt noisy. It usually happens if I select !st from neutral, at rest and do the declutch and gearchange quickly. Typically taking off uphill from a stop and being too lazy to use the handbrake Early warranty query said it was operator related and needed to push the pedal harder all the way down! The clutch also picks up quickly as I release the pedal (close to the floor), compared to earlier Defenders Ive owned. Ive just got used to it and had no problems 6 years and 100k on

That's comforting. I ought to learn by now to just trust most the rattles are "defender-normal"

I think it's got enough in it to ride for a few months at least then I can bite the bullet and get anew HD piece...
