Time for you to know a bit more about Chinese manufacturing

    You will be surprised.

You can have something that has been hardened and makes a spec but has no ductility and therefore fails prematurely (brittle) or you can have something that just doesn't meet the specification at all even though it has a head stamp saying it does as the blokes making it don't give a flying fig about quality or doing something properly, they only want to make money.

Atlas used to be the supplier to Land Rover and most of the British Automotive industry but were would up several years ago.
Every industrial bolt I've seen available here in Australia generally comes from the far East.
Ajax are still manufacturing here but have specialised in the heavy industrial/mining sector, eg CAT, Komatsu, etc.

Taiwanese stuff is very good, and I'm sure if there is good QA in place the mainland make excellent quality stuff too.

Unbrako have been recognised for years as being the standard by which all socket head screws are judged.
The industrial bolts division was spun off from SPS several years ago and the new owners have established a massive factory in India.
    I doubt QC has changed.
Brighton Best is up there with Unbrako.
They've been manufacturing in Taiwan for years.

But heat treatment on fasteners is critical.
You can make anything hard and meet a certain UTS if the alloy used is appropriate, but ductility, the ability to take shock loads without catastrophic failure is something again.

I just don't trust the run of the mill stuff out of the mainland unless it's been independently verified outside.

This actually has been well covered before, although quite some time ago.

*I used to use Hi-tough, but the longer splines means a thicker screw on cap that doesnt fit under the plastic cap of the alloy wheels.
*Hi-tough, A longer spline does not equate to longer lasting, they used to do a standard length spline.
*Ordering was either by fax (to a cave somewhere?) or through Rovacraft (neither option suits me).
*Ashcroft products is what I've been using for quite some time, simple to order, quick to get here and quality is not something I have ever had an issue with.

*Terrafirma is hit and miss from the point of where it is manufactured, not all of it comes from China, if you buy front springs for a Discovery 2, they are made in Australia, a lot of their shocks are made in Thailand (which used to make all their suspension stuff).
*I have used Terrafirma coils on many many Defenders and they are all going fine, yet they are made in China.
*Saying that I'd never bother using Terrafirma axles/drive flanges.
*I take every option I can to NOT buy "made in China" as I dont feel I need to support their economy blindly.

I have taken the time and hardness tested axles and drive flanges from Ashcroft, Hi-tough, cheap **** knock offs, new genuine Land Rover Defender TDCi (puma), Defender TD5 and the only ones that come up to spec are the Ashcroft, Hi-tough and down a bit from there are old genuine Land Rover.

Australia hit $38billion trade surplus with China (in Trump's words, Australia is raping China, and China rapes USA. So Australia is helping China to rape USA

Actually fun fact Trump actually does not want Australia export that much to China. He wants to us to lower trade surplus

What I heard you ask. Primary products that is.

Yes terrafirma made in China stiffs are made from Australian Iron. So

Support our local industry (mining) and buy products made in China.
    Cheers

No thanks, I wasnt debating that anyway, its a personal choice I make.

Start a new thread in general about the importance of supporting our local industry and buying Australian made.

    Pickles.
So I have this problem on mine. The rear caps won't go on. Has anyone ever had a few mm machined off the end of the cap to allow them to fit?? I spoke with MR Automotive on Monday and they said it should be fine...

if your lathing the center cap that covers the axle end and circlip... do it as a chamfer with a radiused major diameter.

Should I just find an engineering place and quote what you said? As I have no idea what that means haha
